The Red Carpet Lapbook
week of July 2, 2001

Closed

Opened up

Bottom left corner has a "How much does the ferry boat cost?" question (50¢) and then a bag of coins made of cardstock, for her to choose the right value.

Vocabulary flip-ups. Pictures on the outside, name & definition on the inside.

Corner-fold answer/questions with a small picture inside for counting items.

Each side of the lapbook has a "left/right" image to learn left and right hands. Below is a "book" that was dictated to me over dinner. I simply asked my daughter to tell me about the story. She started off really well, then had to be asked, "What happened next?" a couple of times, but summarized the story very well, I think, for her age. She really liked that I then rewrote her dictation into our lapbook.

**Note** Even though it isn't "necessary" for B4FIAR, I decided to go ahead and make vocabulary cards for "The Red Carpet."

They printed beautifully onto BLANK 5x8" index cards that were cut in half (to page size of 4x5.)I made an impromptu "vocabulary box" out of a cardboard round tub (from those pre-made pancakes in the refrigerator section at the grocery) that I covered in colored paper (will decorate it later.) This will do for now until out vocabulary cards get too abundant (not something likely to occur while in B4FIAR) and we need to categorize/alphabetize them.

These vocab cards are simply words taken from the story, words that I felt my daughter was unfamiliar with. Funny thing, I hadn't even thought to include "ferryboat" to our short list until while reading the book for the first time, she asked where the FAIRY was.... so I explained the FERRYboat to her...though she still asked if the FAIRY was on the ferry boat to hand out crowns and sparkles. So it got added in, too, for a total of five vocabulary cards for this story...Ferryboat, Trolley car, Doorman, Awning, Telegraph. By the end of the week she was able to give a brief definition of what each of the vocabulary words were.
