Our Bookshelves

I shop at Vegsource for most all of our homeschooling needs. In their homeschooling section they have for sale forums for various age levels as well as want-to-buy forums to post those items you're wanting to buy. Beware though... it can be addicting!

The very best catalog I've found for browsing homeschooling products is from Rainbow Resource. It is a large printed catalog with very detailed descriptions/reviews of products. They're prices are very reasonable to boot! Visit their site to request a catalog be mailed to you. This is a true must-have for every homeschool mom!

There are so many, many homeschooling products on the market. It can be quite overwhelming if one gets caught up in it, thinking they must "own it all." Through lots of catalog reading, critiques from online friends, library use, and the occasional hit or miss, we've managed to buy very little new.

Preschool
See notes on our preschool year

For preschool we used Before Five in a Row, Sonlight Preschool, Reading Made Easy, and Handwriting Without Tears. The latter two did not get added in till late in the year. (Math was a variety of everyday math type stuff, games, Math-u-See and other things.) Learning was often through play with lots of file folder games, the Geosafari, nature walks, singing, hands-on activities, and everyday life.

Kindergarten
See notes on our kindergarten year

For kindergarten we'll be using Five in a Row, read-alouds from Sonlight Kindergarten, phonics work we use Reading Made Easy and supplement/reinforce with games from Reading Reflex. For handwriting we do basic copywork and Handwriting Without Tears. For math we'll continue to use Math-u-See, Simply Numbers which we started at the end of preschool. For additional math fun we play board games, file folder games and work with Pre Math-it. The Geosafari, nature walks, singing, hands-on activities, exercise & movement along with everyday life help to round out our days. Art appreciation is a new additon through books by Lucy Micklethwait. Possible mini-unit studies are Human Body & the Five Senses and studying two Native American Tribes. Through reading aloud, we'll get a nice, gentle overview of American History with the book Our Country's Story, written by Frances Cavanah and illustrated by Janice Holland, © 1945. Poetry, hands-on art, and basic music is also on tap.
