Protecting Books
**Note: Not only do I do this on new hardbacks w/ dust jackets, but also old books... I have an OLD Holling's book that had a "decent" bookjacket but the mylar covering on it (ex-library) was VERY worn. I covered it with new mylar (removing the old) and it sparkles again. Granted this doesn't REPAIR worn bookjacket papers but protects them from further damage.HARDBACKS with DUST JACKETSs It turns out beautifully, though is a bit time consuming. It does look like library books when done! SUPPLY INFO: I happened to get my mylar from Hobby Lobby. But if you know what you're looking for you're bound to find it elsewhere. (note... do NOT rely on store personnel to know what it is you're wanting. i straight out asked the Hobby Lobby people if they had "clear ROLLS of mylar".. they told me they did not.. then when I looked for myself I found MULTIPLE sized rolls!!!) The info from the wrapper of the mylar I bought tells me this... the BRAND is GRAFIX the product name is DURA-LAR "the accetate alternative" my thickness I bought is .003 size of the roll I happened to buy is 40" x 12' price for this size and thickness was $10.99 (a bit pricier than I'd have liked but WORTH IT to me to protect my hardbacks that cost more than paperbacks anyhow!) Truthfully, I now know that I could use an even thinner weight mylar than this. Though the stuff I bougth is NOT NOT NOT bad. I just happened to compare it to the library stuff once I got home and theirs is considerably thinner in weight. Okay now for instructions... I hope can convey this through text!! **For recovering library finds.. one has to carefully remove the old covering, this usually means snipping through any tape that is holding the bookjacket inplace, or peeling away from the glue. After you've done that continue on as follows. 1.) Lay the bookjacket on the roll of mylar, and cut around it, leaving a good margin of mylar all around the jacket (this will be folded around the jacket and hidden underneath once it is on the book) 2.) Fold it all the way around the jacket, starting at the center of one long side. I happen to use a roll of pennies to help me make the crease tight, but you can use anything. *g* 3.) Put the book on it and wrap it around. Then close the book. Open one side and tape ON THE MYLAR ONLY from the front to the inside at the edge of the bookjacket. (Ihappen to take a small piece of mylar to apply to the tape to form a sort of bandage. This keeps the tape from sticking to the book.) Close, flip the book and do the same for the other end of the book. TADA... a snap. after your first couple of books you'll feel like a pro! This and all other webpages within this website
