Basic Dog Treats
Mix together
3 1/2 cup unbleached flour,
2 cup whole wheat flour,
1 cup cornmeal
1/2 cup skim milk powder
1 tablespoon (or 1 package) dry yeast
3 1/2 cups lukewarm chicken or meat broth

Dissolve the yeast in the lukewarm chicken or meat broth. The richer this broth is, the better your dog will like the biscuits. Let yeast broth mixture set 10 min. Then stir in flour mixture. Roll resulting dough out 1/4" thick. Cut dog biscuit shapes from dough. Brush biscuits with egg wash. Bake on greased cookie sheets at 300* for 45 min. Then turn off oven and leave in overnight to finish hardening. Makes 60 medium-sized biscuits.

Brewers yeast is a natural anti-flea remedy.

Makes about 5 dozen bone biscuits
1 cup flour
1/4 cup wheat germ
1/4 cup brewer’s yeast (available at health-food stores)
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon plus 1 1/2 teaspoons canola oil
1 clove garlic, chopped medium
1/2 cup chicken stock plus 3 tablespoons for basting

1. Heat oven to 400 degrees. Line a sheet pan with parchment paper. Mix flour, wheat germ, brewer’s yeast, and salt together in a medium bowl. In a mixing bowl, combine oil and garlic. Alternately add 1/2 cup chicken stock and flour mixture in 3 parts; mix until well combined. Knead about 2 minutes by hand on floured surface; dough will be sticky.

2. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough out about 3/8 inch thick. Cut out bone shapes; place on prepared baking sheet. Bake 10 minutes, rotate baking sheet, and baste with remaining 3 tablespoons chicken stock. Bake 10 minutes longer. Turn off oven, leaving oven door closed. How to Make Dog Treats Ornaments

Christmas is celebrated all over the world, and not just by humans. Here is a very simple project you can do to let your dog know that he is part of the family, too. Ornaments made from bone-shaped doggy treats can be hung from the tree to let your canine friends know you care. They are decorative and the best gift that Santa Paws can give!

Steps:
1.  Purchase bone treats that are shaped like a bone. I prefer the multicolor bones to add color to the tree.

2.  Tie a red or green ribbon around the middle of the bone use make big loops so that you can hang it! Christmas morning sprinkle some of the bones on the floor under the tree.

3.  This project can be done with the family and some dog tasting should make your Maltese feel involved!

Tips:
Leave the bones natural so if your dog eats some prior to Christmas it will be safe for your dog.

Warnings:
Use unwired ribbon, just in case the worst happens and your dog eats the ornament. Ribbon and raffia will pass through a dog's system with a minimum of discomfort

How to Make Your Christmas Tree Pet-Safe

Christmas trees pose all sorts of hidden dangers for dogs. The following steps will minimize the risks.

Steps:
1.  Cover your tree stand with a tree skirt to prevent your pet from drinking the water in the base. This liquid can make your animal sick.

2.  Have pet treats on hand to distract your pet away from the tree. The needles can easily get lodged in the animal's throat, making it hard to swallow.

3.  Place decorations that contain mistletoe, poinsettias and holly only in high sections of the tree, where your pet will be unable to get the tempting leaves and berries. They can cause heartbeat and blood pressure to drop.

4.  Remove strings and ribbons from gifts that are left under the tree. These items may seem like toys to an animal, but can easily choke him or her.

5.  Avoid using tinsel, since your dog can choke on it. Also understand that some of the older tinsel contains lead.

6.  Remember not to use chocolate ornaments if there's a chance that your pet could pull them off. An ingredient called Theo bromine can have a toxic effect on dogs.

7.  Tape the electrical cords of your Christmas tree lights to the wall so your pet won't chew them.

Tips:
Realize that lit candles may capture your dogs attention. To avoid any accidents, leave your pets in the other room if you plan to light candles or make sure candles and all potentially dangerous items are up high!

Keep wrapping paper out of reach since many pets are tempted to chew on it.

I put my tree on a small table just our of Maltese reach so that they do not have to resist temptation. They can't reach it!

How to Create a Gift Basket for a Dog Lover

It is easy to create a custom gift basket for a dog lover. Just select a variety of items that have a dog theme and pack them into a decorative basket chosen especially for the recipient.

Choosing the Gifts and Basket

Steps:
1.  Select the gifts for the dog lover. Items with dog themes include fiction and nonfiction books, dog calendars, coffee mugs, computer mouse pads, T-shirts, note cards, stationery, dog magazines and picture frames.

2.  Select some doggie bones and dog chew toys for the pooch or pooches.

3.  Pick a basket style. Your choices include those with one handle, with two side handles or without handles. Make certain the basket is large enough to hold the gifts you have selected.

4.  Decide on the color of the basket by choosing one that complements the dog lover's home decor. If in doubt, choose a neutral color by selecting a natural wicker basket.

5.  Use shredded paper filling to make the gifts fit snugly in the basket. You can use wrapping paper to tie in the color.

6.  Buy a humorous dog design greeting card. If you are computer savvy you can design a card with their dog on the cover!

Packing the Basket

Steps:
1.  Arrange each present until you find the way it looks best.

2.  Put a layer of shredded paper filling on the bottom of the basket or dog themed wrapping paper.

3.  Place the wrapped gifts vertically or horizontally in the basket, as space allows, pushing the filling between gifts to ensure a very snug fit. Cover some of the gifts completely with the filling to create mini surprises when the basket is unpacked.

4.  Place the basket in the center of a large piece of clear or tinted cellophane gift wrap. You may need two pieces of the wrap to completely cover a large basket.

5.  Bring all sides of the wrap to a few inches above the top of the basket. Secure the wrap by tying it with a long, colorful ribbon.

6.  Tape your greeting card onto the wrap.

Merry Christmas may all your puppies dreams come true.
