The DNA Laboratory is a research laboratory funded by the University of Malta. The main research interest is the identification of genes responsible for complex human diseases. Until now the laboratory has been involved in various studies on gene variants that might be involved in an increased susceptibility for osteoporosis and coeliac disease as part of a number of undergraduate and post-graduate studies. The laboratory is equipped to do basic molecular techniques for DNA extraction, PCR and electrophoresis. The laboratory also works in collaboration with other laboratories such as the Laboratory of Molecular Genetics, University of Malta.

Research ProjectsThe laboratory is involved in two gene mapping projects. A whole genome linkage scan was carried out in two large families with a highly penetrant form of osteoporosis. From the results of this scan two chromosomal loci identified and candidate genes are being further studied by sequencing to identify any possible mutations. A number of SNPs within candidate genes for osteoporosis were also studied in a population of Maltese postmenopausal women. In December 2005, the laboratory was also involved into a similar study to identify genes responsible for coeliac disease. Two SNPs within the CTLA4 gene were studied for an association with coeliac disease.
