At what age can I start my training?

This is down to the individual, but usually children start training from the age of about 7 or 8 up.

How old is too old the take up Shotokan karate?

You're never too old to start. It is however recomended, as with any physical activity, that older people have a chat with their G.P. for some advice on how best to approach a new healthier lifstyle.

Do I need a karate suit to begin training with the club?

No, in fact you really should attend a few classes to make sure that Shotokan karate is for you before investing in a "gi" (suit). For your first few classes you should wear some loose fitting clothing, perhaps some jog pants and a t-shirt, whatever's comfortable. Training is usually done in bare feet.

Will I be expected to fight against other people?

During training, contact is kept to a minimum, particularly with the lower grades. More importantly, you will never be expected to do anything that you're not ready for, or are uncomfortable with.

How long before I get my first belt?

This is very much down to the individual. Typically grading takes place twice a year, so you may be ready for your fist grading within 6 months, but only through regular practice both in the dojo and at home.

I'm not very fit, do I need to be fit before starting?

There's no better way to get fit than to jump right in, you'll find that Shotokan karate is a wonderful way to get fit. The more you train, the fitter you become, and the more energy you can put into your training.

I'm not sure if it's for me, can I come and watch a session?

Of course, you're welcome to come down and quietly watch one of the training sessons, while there, why not have a chat with one of the instructors who will be able to answer any questions that you may have. Who knows, maybe you'll find yourself taking part at the very next training sesson!

If you find that your question is not answered here, then please feel free to email us by clicking on the email button on the menu on the left, and we will be glad to include your question in the F.A.Q page or reply to your query via email...
