Over two decades ago, the two and four door 1979 Malibu with it's 9C1 police package replaced the 9C1 Nova, the mainstay of the Chevrolet police fleet business, as Chevrolet continued to downsize all of its vehicles. Chevrolet made the 9C1 Nova, 9C1 Malibu, and 9C1 Impala simultaneously in 1978 but discontinued the 9C1 Nova in 1979. In 1979, the Police duties would be go to the 9C1 Malibu and 9C1 Impala. The 9C1 Malibu was the only G-body Malibu offered with the 170-hp (165-hp in California) 350-cubic-inch/4-barrel V-8. While the Malibu 9C1 was less-heralded than the Nova 9C1, the Malibu 9C1 was used in even larger numbers. The Malibu 9C1 police package was available until 1983 when the four door Malibu was discontinued. The Malibu had a bit shorter wheelbase than the Nova but the interior room and trunk room was greater. It was available with a 200-cid V-6, or 305-cid and 350-cid V-8's. There were even plastic scale model kits of the Malibu 9C1 police car made.
