The Hollywood Improv– Thursday, March 15, 2001

After a disappointing night before, involving the Arcadia and the fact that it was closed, we were very excited to go to the Improv on Thursday night. Ash, Chris and I were going to go, and meet Michelle and Laura there. After dropping Monika off at the train station to go home, Ash and I rushed home to get ready for the Improv…after all, we had to look pretty for our guys! : ) We got dressed in record time and picked Chris up from his house. We got to the Improv with plenty of time to spare, so we decide to try to eat dinner at the Improv. First, Chris and I give our names and confirm our reservations. Then, Ash steps up to the window and explains to the woman that Ryan Stiles has put a ticket aside for her. After much searching, the woman says that there is no Ashley or Ashley Cook on the list, she’s sorry. Ash then says, “Wait, didn’t that say the name Ashley on the last page?” The woman checks, laughs, and says, “Why, yes! There you are! Wow, good thing you saw that!”. Um, yeah, good thing.

We are then informed that there are no openings for dinner. The guy standing outside who took our tickets (who was very nice, by the way, his name was Frank) told us that there was really nowhere to eat in the area except a café across the street, which looked kinda expensive. But being that we were all pretty hungry and that was the only place, we decided to check it out. It ended up being really good, and not too expensive, so we were happy. As we neared the end of our meal, Ash asked the waiter for the check (we were still eating, but we wanted it quickly since we had the show). The waiter sort of gave her a LOOK, and said, “You want it NOW?” We said, “Yes, we have a show to go to.” The waiter just kind of gave us this attitude…”Okay then…”. As if we were asking him to strip down and do a little dance for us or something. Whatever. So we paid, left, and went back over to the Improv. We went up to Frank, who told us which line to get on, and we saw Michelle waiting. We just sort of conveniently slipped into line with her. : ) We talked as we waited on line, then finally were let into the actual stage area place thing. : )

There were a TON of tables, all set very close together, basically they stuff as many people into one room as possible, without taking into account the customers’ comfort level. We had pretty good seats, although we were kinda far back, because there were a bunch of big groups there who got the front. Anyway, the standups were first. They were bad. VERY VERY bad. In the middle of all the comics, I decided to go to the bathroom, and Ash came with me. Then Michelle joined us. As we left, Michelle mentioned that she had seen some of the performers out front eating, and asked if we wanted to go see them. Ash said that she didn’t want to leave Chris for so long, but Michelle and I went to check out the performers. They were still eating, and didn’t see us. We went back in and tried to enjoy the rest of the standups. Actually, the guy right before the improv was pretty funny, so that was good. Then we started to see some of the guys lining up by the door…Drew, Sean, and Chip we saw. We were getting all excited, and finally they announced Drew. He went up, did a little standup. Some I recited along with him, from Vegas, and some was new. Then he introduced the rest of the improvisers…Sean, Julie, Rick Overton, Chip, Kathy Kinney, and Ryan. Greg, Brad, and Colin were unfortunately not there, but we won’t get into that. : )

The show was pretty good, a lot of funny moments. I can’t really remember details, and nothing really stands out for me, but I do remember laughing. :) After the show ended, our group stood up and raced out of there. We searched the area for the guys. I saw Chip standing nearby, talking to 2 people, and hung out near him because I wanted to say hi. Then we saw Ryan standing outside smoking, but Ash didn’t want to go out there yet, because she didn’t want to bug him while he was smoking. I saw a little yellow car pull in front of the Improv, and saw Ryan standing by the door. All of a sudden, we looked over at where Chip was, and he had disappeared. How he did that without us noticing, I have no idea. So, we went outside, and there’s no sign of Ryan. We look inside the yellow car, and see that he’s driving it! We just kind of look at each other, wanting to talk to him, but not wanting to go as far as to knock on his window or anything! A couple of seconds later, he just drove away. We were very disappointed. We stood near the doorway; just kind of shocked that Ryan had left so quickly.

We then saw that Chip was standing near us, talking to 2 drunk girls who were apparently hitting on him. He kept showing them his wedding ring. I was dying, it was so funny! When they finally left him alone (they went to go find Drew, LOL), we went up to Chip. Michelle said hi and then brought me in. I said hi, and that I had met him in Vegas. He said that he was pretty sick when he was in Vegas, and details from there were fuzzy. Then I reminded him of man-voice. He said, “I probably don’t recognize you because you have your real voice now! I only recognize the deep-voice, see if I remember.” I said, “My name is Melanie” in a really deep voice, and he goes, “Man-voice! Ahh!” It was funny. He’s a cutie. :) We then introduced him to Ash, who had never met him before. He said, “Do I know you from somewhere? You look familiar” She said that she had gone to the Groundlings when he was there, and then the next day was at the taping where she was picked to do Sound Effects. He remembered, and we all talked for a few minutes. Ash mentioned that her sister Jamie loves him, and asked him for an autograph for her. She mentioned that Jamie’s in a play at home, Dangerous Liaisons. Chip asked how to spell her name, and Ash spelled, “J A M I E”. Chip said that he has a cousin who spells it J A I M E, so he wanted to make sure. He wrote, “You’re the most beautiful woman I’ve never seen. Good luck in the play!”. He’s so cute! : ) The funny thing is, though, that after all that about spelling Jamie’s name right, he STILL wrote Jaime! Oh well!! : )

We talked a bit more, and Michelle had to run off somewhere…I forget where. She handed Chip her notebook and asked him to hold it for her. While she was gone, Chip opened the notebook and said, “Hmmm, maybe now I can ask HER a couple of questions, huh?” Then we walked away from the doorway because people had to get through, we went off to the side. We saw Michelle coming back, and Chip quick stuffed the notebook in the back of his pants to hide it! When she came back we played dumb and said that someone had taken the notebook. Then Chip turned around and showed her that he had it. He was so funny! We started joking about how Michelle could auction it off on E-Bay, and all that. Chip said that it wasn’t REALLY in his pants, just at the top. We told him, “No, it was pretty far down there!” LOL! He was so great! I asked him for a picture really quick, and told him that I had come all the way from NJ to see him. He said, “Wow, you don’t have an accent at all!” I said no, I didn’t think I did, and he said, “Well, everyone kinda expects people from there to talk like the Sopranos or something.” Once again, may I say how cute. :) We then finally let him go, and thanked him for spending so much time with us. What a great guy. :)

We looked around for anyone else, and saw that everyone had left! EVERYONE! Ash and Michelle made me feel better by saying, “You know Mel, this is the first time that they’ve all left so quickly!! Seriously, every other time we’ve been here, they hang out and talk for a while!” Gee, thanks guys. :) We decided that since there was really nothing else to do, we would just go home. Chris was practically falling asleep as we were standing there, anyway. :) So Ash, Chris and I said goodbye to Michelle and Laura and left to go home, talking about how cute Chip is and how weird it was that Ryan left. We dropped Chris off at home, and went home. So, my Improv experience wasn’t QUITE as exciting as I was expecting, but I still had a great time, and loved talking to Chip! No night is bad when you get to spend time with him. :)
