The Wayne Brady Show Taping - Thursday, March 15, 2001

Our final WL-related excursion was on Friday, and Nessa, Ash, and I decided to go see the first taping of Waynes new show. We left right after Ness got home from work, and drove to Hollywood. We got to the CBS Studios, and saw a few people on a line. We asked them what they were there for, and they said Dennis Miller Live. A guy told us where to go for Waynes show; we had to drive around to another building. We drove to where we needed to go, parked, and walked to where the line was. We werent sure where to go, thoughwe knew we were on a list, but we didnt know what to do. All of a sudden we saw Kenneth, one of the WL pages that Nessa and Ash knew. He told us where to go, and we went to some special area where list people were. :) We got to sit on these long benches, and talked and fooled around for a while. Kenneth came over to us to chat, and told us that wed be going in first and get good seats because we were in Waynes fan club. We were like, What? Fan club? Kenneth said that the people on the list were the fan club. We were just like, Okay then. We were still waiting for Michelle and Laura, who we figured had gotten into traffic, so we kept getting up and searching the parking lot and the other line for them. We hoped they would get there in time.

A little while later they called out a bunch of namesAsh was one of them, and we got to go into a separate line, and, then told to go in. After looking for Michelle and Laura one last time, we went in. We told Kenneth to look for Michelle and Laura, and tell them where we were. We got seated in the very first and second rows of the stage. Ash, Ness and I were in the second row. We started talking to people around us, trying to figure out the whole fan club thing. Nobody had any idea what was going on, but we started joking around and electing people president of the fan club and all that. It was funny. Then we saw Michelle and Laura come in a little while later, but they couldnt be seated by us because all the seats near us were taken. They were taken to seats, and then got switched around a bunch of times, but then finally got settled, and had pretty good seats from what I could tell. Finally the warm-up guy came out and started talking to the audience, getting the energy up, playing games and stuff. Then it was time to start, and Wayne came out.

This is from Michelles report on her site, because she remembers details of the show much better than me:

After getting stuck in traffic forever, Laura and I finally made it to the studio. We got there late, so we were not able to sit with Ashley, Nessa and Melanie, who were already seated on the floor right by the stage. First we were seated in the first row behind the group on the floor. Then we had to move and got separated, so I was not happy. The page I was talking to said they had no more seats left together, but there were a bunch of empty seats. When I asked about them he said that they were for people on the production list. I tried to tell him that we were on the production list, but he wouldn't listen, so we found a page we knew and he pointed us out on the list and sat us together. The seats were great. We were about three rows up and towards the center of the main stage. We had a perfect view of all three stage, so even though I would have liked to sit with Ashley, Mellie and Nessa we ended up with better seats.

There were three stages. The center stage was raised up and it's where Wayne did his singing numbers. The Improv stage was on the left side (if you're looking at the stage). It was pretty plain. Just carpeted with a tiled translucent background. The sketch stage was on the right side, and that was kept covered with screens when they were setting up the sketches.

I'm going to try and remember this as much in the order of what happened as I can, but the night is kind of a blur. Wayne started the show singing (Mellie do you remember name of the song?), and I just remembering being totally awed by his voice. The full potential of his singing talents are not used on Whose Line. He had six backup dancers (three men and three women), and he danced with them while singing. After the song was over he talked to the audience (he was out of breath due to the dancing) for a few minutes and then went back to change.

We moved to the sketch stage and watched the beginning and end of a skit that was shot a few days earlier. We saw them shoot the beginning, which was a guy having a heart attack and the end, which was him and his wife standing together looking out the front door. They were going to show the part the was filmed earlier but ended up deciding to do it later and instead moved to the Improv stage.

Wayne came out dressed in purple pants and a purple sweater and introduced the other Improvisors. The only one I'd seen before was Jonathan from Wayne Brady and Friends. The other male improvisor was named Joel, and I don't remember the names of the two women. They played a game where an audience member was chosen to read lines written by the audience (called scene with an audience member on WL). Wayne asked for a suggestion of something people hated and someone suggested flies. The scene was Wayne as the audience member's gardener. The audience member was really hamming it up, and I thought that game went well. Jonathan was the funniest playing a fly They also played jeopardy, and I thought that went nowhere. They played the game where when prompted by Joel, Wayne and Jonathan would have to rerun or fast forward through the scene. The scene was about stealing soap. After finishing the Improv games, Wayne went to change, and we watched the entire skit on the monitors that we had seen partially taped earlier.

The skit was called James Brown 911. The guy (Joel) had a heart attack, and Wayne busted down the front door dressed like James Brown, sang the wife through CPR and then left. There were two other James Brown skits shown later that night on the monitors and I hated them all. The second one was Wayne as James Brown talking down a plane that was in trouble by singing to the pilot, and I don't remember the third one. I think I was blocking it out by then.

After watching James Brown 911, Wayne came back out to the center stage and introduced his guests Justin Timberlake and Brain McKnight. They improvised a song about a women sitting in the front right section of the audience. She was dressed all in purple and even had purplish hair. Justin came up with the funniest line. Something about looking like she was from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory and then singing oompa loompa loopidy doo. It was really funny. I don't think the woman thought it was very funny though, because after the song they had to ask her to smile so they could film her.

After that they moved to the sketch stage and filmed a sketch taking place during a keriokie contest. This one I really enjoyed. Wayne played the MC, and he was announcing the performers. First it was Brain McKnight (who was playing an amateur singer) singing a song by Brian McKnight. Wayne said the song might be too hard and maybe he should choose an easier one. Brain kept repeating, I came to sing that song. He started singing, and Wayne interrupted him, because he was jealous that he sounded so good, and said that was enough and that he was no Brian McKnight. The next performer was Justin Timberlake who I believe sang Uptown Girl (Melanie?)[note - Michelle is right, it was Uptown Girl], and it was a riot. He got Wayne dancing with him, and I think Brian got up and was dancing with them at the end.

Moving back to the center stage, they set up curtains, chandeliers and three microphones. Wayne, Justin and Joel came out dressed in Tuxedoes. Justin had a wig on, and they sang in the style of opera as the three dope tenors. They had passed out long stem roses to the first row and after they were done singing the audience threw the roses onto the stage. There was something wrong with the music (I think it was overpowering the vocals), so they had to do it again. While they were getting the sound fixed, Justin was fooling around talking to the audience in an Italian accent. They got the sound fixed and did it a second time. I think this was my favorite musical number of the night.

The next skit was on the center stage and it started with Jonathan. It was a question and answer type show and Jonathan asked for a suggestion from the audience for something that a person could be an expert in. He accepted the Titanic. Wayne came out dressed in a dress, wig and high heels. He was playing his grandmother who was on a show as an expert in the Titanic. Wayne's Mom was in the audience, and it was hysterical, because they looked so much like each other. Wayne took questions from the audience pertaining to the Titanic and answered them. After the skit, Wayne walked back stage to change and it was too funny to watch him walk in heels.

Wayne's final number was a compilation of songs by artists that influenced him. He sang four or five songs, and I've heard them all before but the only artist I recognized was Sammy Davis Junior.

They did one small pick up at the very end on the skit stage with Wayne and Jonathan (or maybe it was Joel) as DJ's on the radio. After that they did some pick ups with the dancers, then it was over.

Wayne was very cute throughout the taping...he kept saying how thankful he was to everyone for coming, to everyone that was involved with the show, etc. He mentioned Mandie a few times, and at one point went up to her in the audience and gave her a little kiss. It was very sweet. At the very end, there was music playing, and he introduced the other members of the cast, plus the dancers. He then said that he was going to do something that he had waited his whole life to do...and went and got his mom from the audience and brought her onstage to dance with her. It was seriously the cutest thing! :) I was so happy for Wayne, it seemed like he was having a blast, and it was truly a wonderful show. Like Michelle said in her report, Whose Line does not do Wayne justice...his talent in singing and dancing goes so far beyond what he does on WL. It's amazing. Also, for the record, Joel and Jonathan were absolutely hilarious! I had never seen them perform before, and they were great.

Also, a funny thing was Wayne came out during one of the breaks, and the warm-up guy mentioned "your fan club". Wayne said, "Fan club? I thought that was just my wife and my mom!". During one of the breaks, there was a Wayne trivia contest...one girl sitting by us was in it (she was the "president" LOL) and she had to go against Wayne's mom! It was the funniest thing. We tried to help her along, but of course Wayne's mom won. :) It was too cute.

One other thing that Michelle mentioned that I want to add to....when Justin was up for the 3 Dope-Ass Tenors bit, he had this big hair wig thing on...I can't really describe it, it's hard to picture it until you actually see it. Anyway, the guy sitting in front of Nessa said to Justin, "Hey, nice hair." That's when Justin started talking in his Italian accent, and kept saying, "What, you do not like my hair? Do I look funny to you?" and kept winking at the guy. It was so funny!! We were dying. :)

After the taping, they gave out t-shirts, and we went and talked to Ashs friend Cory (a writer for the show, Waynes best friend, hes the one who toured with him for Wayne Brady and Friends) for a few minutes. After that we went outside and fooled the people into giving us extra t-shirts! Were so sneaky! Anyway, we were just kinda hanging out by Nessas car, fooling around. We started taking pictures (okay, I started taking pictures, surprise surprise), trying to finish out my roll of film. Good times. After a little while of talking and hanging out, we decided we had to go. Michelle and Laura had a long trip home, and we were pretty hungry. We said our goodbyes, and gave our hugs, and got into our cars and left. The show overall was really great, and I totally cant wait to see it when its broadcasted. Good times!
