Undercover Brother review

Starring: Eddie Griffin, Chris Kattan, Aunjanue Ellis and Denise Richards, Dave Chappelle, Billy Dee Williams
Directed by: Malcolm D. Lee

Undercover Brother is the movie to see for some good laughs. I found myself laughing from beginning to end, something few movies have been able to do lately. The Undercover Brother (Griffin) is out to stop an evil plan by The Man to control the minds of all African Americans.

At first I was surprised that the movie was as good as it was, but I dont see why. The movie had many things going for it, including a great cast. Eddie Griffin is hilarious and cool in an Austin Powers meets Shaft kind of way. Dave Chappelle is always funny, and his performance in this movie is no exception. Other Brothas (agents of the B.R.O.T.H.E.R.H.O.O.D, an organization that foils evil plots by the Man) include the Chief (Chi McBride), Smart Brother (Gary Anthony Williams), Sistah Girl (Aunjanue Ellis) and Lance, the white intern played by Neil Patrick Harris (Doogie Howser, MD). Pit them against Penelope Snow (Richards) and Mr. Feather (Kattan), then throw in James Brown and Billy Dee Williams and you got yourself a heck of a comedy.

There is lots of witty humor as opposed to extremely raunchy jokes or stupid humor. Some of the jokes will raise some eyebrows. The movie is full of racial stereotypes but for the most part it was surprisingly tame (or maybe Ive just been desensitized to certain things). I cant remember the last time Ive seen a comedy where someone wasnt urinating on someone else, having intercourse with several people at a time or drinking the ummm Male Jelly of some person or animal (American Pie, Van Wilder, Kingpin).

Undercover Brother is exploring fairly familiar territory. It was refreshing to see Eddie Griffin doing his best impersonation of Eddie Murphy going undercover as a white guy. The movie uses time-tested jokes such as: White people have no rhythm; black people eat fried chicken with hot sauce; afros are funny; afro combs with black power fists on them are funny; afro sheen is funnyand so forth.

Try not to blink. You may miss some of the site gags in the background. Or worse, you might miss the entire movie!!! The whole thing was only about 75 minutes long! To pay 7.50$ (10 cents a minute!) to see something that barely rivals the season finale of Friends in terms of length was a bitter pill to swallow indeed. Is the movie worth seeing? If youre in the mood to laugh, then I would say so, but 75 minutes is more worth a trip to the video store than a trip downtown.

Second Opinions
DroopyMcC Pretty funny, but I figure some people might be offended (you know, those people with no sense of humour). Anyway, then length (or lack thereof) really chopped down its potential rating.
