Lara Croft: Tomb Raider - review

Starring: Angelina Jolie, Daniel Craig, Leslie Phillips, Mark Collie, Chrie Barrie, Jon Voight
Directed by: Simon West

Lara Croft: Tomb Raider. What's the story? Not much really. Every five thousand years the planets align making it possible to travel through time using a magical triangle. The Illuminati, a shifty bunch of peeps, intend to take advantage of this rare event by stealing a magical key from Lara Croft and finding the two halves of the triangle.

Or something like that. Whatever. The movie is exactly what you would expect; Lara Croft parading around in some clothing (if even) that leaves very little to the imagination. Oh yeah, and she has a gun in each hand. Does this make for an entertaining movie? You damn straight it does!

Let's look at it this way, the Mummy Returns had a bunch of computer animated monsters chasing around Brendan Fraser in some kind of flying hot air balloon (a dirgible?). Tomb Raider had a bunch of computer animated monsters chasing Angelina Jolie on a motor bike. Advantage, Tomb Raider.

Kudos to Jolie's acting in this film. She was very convincing and very charismatic. If indeed there were a psychotic "tomb raider" named Lara Croft she was it. Her British accent was very convincing and consistent throughout the movie. Her two cheesy sidekicks were very funny, mostly because they seemed so out of place next to the insanely adventurous Lara Croft. As a fan of the British sci-fi sitcom Red Dwarf, I feel it is necessary to extend my praise to Christopher Barrie who is very entertaining in his role as Lara Croft's butler.

The action scenes are very good. Exceptionally good, perhaps as a result of the fact that they are slightly more sparing with the special effects and emphasize stunt work. In short, if one can overlook silly things like plot and character development, Tomb Raider is an extremely entertaining movie. It possesses a subtle wit and a good-looking actress in some very elaborate action scenes.

I give Tomb Raider a ten. Almost Jack worthy but, what's the deal with time travel plots anyway? They never make any sense! And that stupid robot that Lara Croft feels compelled to pump full of bullets during her spare time?

DroopyMcC No dirigeables make this one automatically better than The Mummy Returns.

ASY One good action sequence, the rest were sub-par. Elaborate "5000 year-old" settings made no sense. Meh...
