The Score review

Starring: Robert DeNiro, Edward Norton, Marlon Brando, Angela Bassett
Directed by: Frank Oz

I admit that I probably would not have seen The Score, if not for the hometown appeal. Sure, it stars huge names, but it's the Montreal setting that was the kicker for me. I'm glad I did see this movie, because it's an example of a superior crime thriller.

The plot seems simply enough. Nick (DeNiro) is a retiring superthief, managing a Montreal jazz club. His old associate, Max (Brando) asks him to do one last heist with an up-and-coming rookie, Jack (Norton). There is some jewel-encrusted scepter at the Montreal customs house, and Jack's alter ego, Brian, works there. So the team has their insider, now all they have to do is plan everything out. That's where things get complicated.

The Score is all about trust. Can Nick trust Jack? Are Jack's blueprints and technical layouts completely accurate? Is Max telling Nick the whole truth as to the reason of the robbery? All Nick wants to do is retire, manage his club and settle down with his girlfriend (Bassett). But the payoff from this job is too tempting to let get away. So he's in, a decision that leads to many plot twists. Just when you think you figured it out, a new surprise pops up at the end. But then that twist is countered, andoh, well. I'm not going to give anything away. Do yourself a favour and see this movie, if you have the chance. Montreal is portrayed like Europe, the acting is above top-notch and there are enough bends and weaves in the plot to keep you on your toes.
