Well, many would say that as a movie critic, I am not nearly discriminating enough. I sincerely considered this when last Friday I found myself enjoying a movie that the critics found absolutely wretched, Scooby-Doo.
Now, obviously the movie is nothing visionary. The characters don't have any depth, the plot is silly, the jokes are childish. But it's fun. I can't remember the last time I was in a theatre laughing at a gas passing competition! Between Scooby-Doo and his best buddy Shaggy no less! The movie was just fun. I thought it was clever that they set it at an amusement park on an island during Spring Break. So what do you get? Some beloved childhood characters, solving a cheesy mystery on an island filled to the brim with college girls having fun. It's like being on vacation.
The special effects were decent. Overwhelmingly decent. In fact I found the monsters in this movie more inspired than the strange creatures in Episode II. Not to mention Scooby who's a funny and well-rendered character.
What do critics really expect from a Scooby-Doo movie? I mean, it's a children's character! Is it just me, or does it seem that these movie critics are a little too eager to bash a movie intended for little kids? I mean, some of these reviewers are over 50 years old and it seems they walk into the theater expecting Schindler's List.
So let me tell you what I think the secret is to enjoying this movie. Don't expect some life changing experience. Don't expect characters that are deep and relatable (he's a dog for crying out loud!). Just go in, pretend you're a kid again and maybe you'll have a few laughs. If you've loved the cartoon as a kid, then you'll love this movie. As far as movies go, I've seen a whole lot worse.
