I?ve always said that zombies have been seriously underused in movies. Maybe it?s because there?s that fine balance between laughable undead and frightening undead. So now comes along Resident Evil, based on the video game of the same name, where zombies go around feasting on the living. But is it any good? With the proper expectations, I think so.
The movie opens with Milla Jovovich?s character waking up in mansion, not remembering a think about her past. According to sources, her name is Alice, but that?s never mentioned in the film. This is the type of movie where they say ?Hey!? to grab others? attention. Anyway, We soon find out that deep underneath the town of Raccoon City, the Umbrella Corp. has a secret lab where they?re working on genetic experiments. But something went wrong (something always seems to go wrong in secret labs, no?) and all the workers turn into zombies. Alice meets up with a commando-type team who are in charge of cleaning up the mess. Then the violence begins. Glorious, copious violence. If you?ve ever played the games or had a secret urge to see reams of undead slaughtered brutally, this is the picture for you. The guns vs. zombie battle is the main selling point of this movie (and incidentally, the games, to which the film does do justice); the spectacularly gratuitous semi-nude scenes of Milla Jovovich are just a bonus.
There are of course some things that bothered me. Like why didn?t that laser grid pass first? Is it because the Red Queen has a sense of humour? Why did they use an Itchy and Scratchy-esque idea to defeat the big baddie? And why couldn?t they afford decent CGI for the big mutant? These are all questions that are not very relevant for the IQ level needed to enjoy the movie. Maybe they?ll be answered in the inevitable sequel. We?ll see when it comes out.

Sooo silly, but strangely entertaining. The zombie with the tie and jacket raised the rating to 10. And Milla too, of course. |
