Directed by: Steven Soderbergh
When I first heard that George Clooney was remaking Ocean's Eleven, replete with big stars, I thought, "Here we go. A silly celebrity vanity project." But the final product is upon us and it's very good. It's the type of movie that harks back to an earlier age of movie, where big celebs would get together and make movies that were simply fun.
For some reason, people have an aversion to Clooney, and I don't get it. He seems cool, and never cooler than in this movie, where he plays Danny Ocean, a dude that just got out of the big house and immediately wants to rob casinos. And not just one casino, but three. Of course, to pull off this caper, he needs the help some talented crooks. He goes off and recruits a team of eleven (hence the title) and together they plan a highly elaborate scheme to get the loot and escape safely. That's the movie. Simple enough, right? Well, yes and no. While the plot can easily be summed up, there and little mind games that are played between some characters which complicates things.
Some people may be turned off by the twists in the movie, but there's not really essential to enjoying this movie. To enjoy it, one has to buy into the 'coolness' of the characters. Everything everyone says is just so cool. Some lines are so cool, in fact, they they make no sense whatsoever. The dialogue is so laden with 'cool' that you can almost see 'coolness' dripping from the script. At this point, you may be wondering, "What the hell are you talking about, Droops?" Well, see the movie and you'll find out. After seeing this film, I wanted to walk like the characters do, talk like they do, move like they do.
Ocean?s Eleven has style in excess, but that's not to say that other elements of a good movie aren't there. Plenty of big name actors show up, and they're all good. The plot, while ridiculous and ultimately impossible, is cohesive enough to sustain interest. After all is said (and done), Ocean's Eleven will be remembered as a fun night out, a good rental or what have you. In other words, you can't miss with this movie. It's enjoyable, just like a movie should be.

A good, yet typical heist movie. There weren't enough complications to it; the plan was too perfect. |
