Definitely worth seeing, Minority Report is a more traditional sci-fi movie, portraying an example of technology running amuck. In this case, it is a theoretical technology developed to predict and stop murders before they happen. A group of three freaky psychics (called Precogs), permanently hooked up to a big computer upload their visions to the Pre-Crime division in Washington. There, cops, (ie Tom Cruise as Detective John Anderton) can determine the exact time that a murder is going to take place and hopefully stop it before it happens. Furthermore, the criminals are convicted on the spot and apprehended, to be placed in prison.
Kind of farfetched? Hell yeah! But its pretty interesting and very entertaining. Though it seems Spielberg is trying to imitate his late friend Stanley Kubrick, his future is just slightly less bleak than Kubricks. Sometimes it looks like a cross between The Jetsons and one of the more difficult levels of a Sonic the Hedgehog videogame. Other times the scenery is dark and disturbing like a scene from Bladerunner. I suppose the movie is comparable to A.I. on some levels, but I would argue that it was less emotional than A.I. and more of an action movie.
Without giving too much away, it suffices to say that this pre-crime technology is not without its glitches and soon Tom Cruise is accused of committing a crime at sometime in the future. Most of the movie follows Cruise through Spielbergs bizarre future, trying to run from the law. All the while it seems he gets closer and closer to the future indicated by the precogs.
Great acting by Cruise and his supporting cast, but the real fun in the movie are the special effects. At very least I can say Ive seen some things I havent seen before. Combine that with good action, carried by an engaging story filled with some inspired plot twists and you got yourself an extremely decent movie. Insanely decent in fact!
My prediction, you will enjoy it!!! (I will now, boo myself. Boooooooo!!!!)

I got slammed for liking A.I. (I still stand by my review), but this Spielberg outing is more for the masses. Not too complicated, the action is there, and terrific acting make this a fun time at Guzzo. It wasn't as amazing as I thought it could have been, though. Oh well...Pretty good, anyway... |
