Jackass: The Movie - review

Starring: Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Bam Margera, Ryan Dunn
Directed by: Jeff Tremaine

Debuting on MTV in October 2000, Jackass was an unmitigated success. Appealing mainly to the lowest common denominator, the show followed the twisted tomfoolery of a bunch of young heterosexual men. Who could forget the time that Brad Pitt was abducted? Or the time that Steve-O stated he was "sick of this pooping stuff" and pierced his ass cheeks together? Or when Wee Man used Preston as a raft?

Wannabes soon followed and some retards got hurt. So after just 25 episodes, the show was voluntarily shutdown by co-creator and co-producer, Johnny Knoxville. Yet by doing so at the height of its popularity, his decision left fans craving for more.

Enter Jackass: The Movie, a carbon copy of the show in every way, except without all of the censors. It's a movie with no plot, no script, that's crudely shot and filled with utter lunacy. And did I mention it's the funniest movie that you'll see this year.

Describing any of the stunts or gags would ruin some of the element of surprise, so just think of the film as an 80 minute version of the show, with some better skits and the ultimate Jackass ending.

Now understandably, this movie is not for everyone. Those who don't like the show should simply avoid it at all costs, as it has enough big screen blood, vomit, urine, sh*t, man ass and junk to last the average person a lifetime.

The film is, however, geared towards the guy who sat in front of Droopy and me the first time I saw the movie. Perfectly capturing the essence of the moment, he astutely stated with a youthful, glazed-over tone, "It says dick" when he saw the name of Jackass?s production company, Dickhouse.

For my second viewing, I was with my stepbrother, a newly initiated Jackass fanatic, and his girlfriend, who was dragged along. So for those who aren't sure whether this movie is right for them, here's her take: "I almost gagged a few times, but it wasn't as bad as I thought." She also followed that up with something about how cute the guys are. Whatever rubs her Buddha, I guess.

So after 2 years, it seems that the greatest Jackass stunt would be reserved for the movie's opening weekend. As mainstream movie critics such as Roger Ebert and Leonard Maltin refused to review the film, Jackass: The Movie debuted at #1.

Second Opinions
DroopyMcC If you're easily offended, grossed-out, disgusted by unabashed group male-nudity, vomiting, urinating, defecating, stupidity and senselessness or have no sense of humour, do not see this movie. For the rest of us, this was one fun time at the Guzzo. I wished it was a little longer.
