Starring: Wesley Snipes, Kris Kristofferson, Leonor Valera
Directed by: Guillermo del Toro
Blade II stars Wesley Snipes as Blade, Kris Kristofferson as Whistler and Leonor Valera as the vampire Blade loves. The movie is a great excuse for some of the best action sequences I've seen all year. Guns, and martial arts and motor bikes and strange sharp thingies.
The story revolves around the emergence of a new breed of super vampires called Reapers, who threaten to wipe out all of human and vampire kind. Enter Blade and his ethnically diverse vampire posse, strutting on scene to some dope gangsta rap with the intent of ending this menace! Actually the story was kind of interesting with some interesting plot twists toward the end. The movie was also quite tense, as the alliance between Blade and his sworn enemies, the vampires, is always on the verge of collapse. This is where Ron Pearlman as the vampire Reinhart shines as one of the key villains of the film who is just waiting for a chance to stab Blade in the back.
However, the movie's main attraction is the action! Action! Action! It's so violent, and so gory! Man, I loved it. The reapers are quite simply some of the most disgusting things you'll ever see. The only times the action scenes really fell apart was when they replaced Blade with fully rendered computer animated images. That wasn't very convincing, but it was used sparingly so I won't complain.
Blade II is what we on Itoop refer to as some Hyper Cheese! It's entertaining at the expense of actual plausibility. There's no exact definition for that, but if you see the movie you'll get a sense of it. One example was the use of subtitles to indicate when the vampires were swearing in their mother tongue.
If you liked the first Blade, you'll love the second Blade. Just like the first one it is very entertaining. And just like the first one, the Itoop posse were the only ones in the theatre laughing like crazy.
This movie is an easy Jack.

The fight scenes are surprisingly good, but the story is pretty lame. Do only itoopers appreciate the hilarious Red Dwarf and Soul Calibur connections? |
