A Knight's Tale ? review

Starring: Heath Ledger, Mark Addy, Rufus Sewell, Shannyn Sossamon
Directed by: Brian Helgeland

I must confess, I walked into the movie theatre expecting a total garbage fest. If such a thing existed, I was certain A Knight's Tale would be it. Nevertheless I was very, very surprised. From the very beginning the movie establishes itself as a feel good comedy when Lord's, Ladies and peasants alike begin chanting We Will Rock You, before a jousting contest.

The unlikely comedy is about a young peasant, named William Thatcher (played by Heath Ledger) who wishes to participate in jousting competitions. As only nobility can participate in the prestigious contests, William, along with his hilarious friends Roland and Wat, enlist the help of a writer named Chaucer (Paul Bettany) to forge documents proving he is a noble.

David Bowie? Nike Armour? One might ask what any of these things have to do with a medieval story? The answer is not much but it makes for a very entertaining movie. The movie was a little long and during the last 20 minutes I found myself wishing they had cut out one or two of the jousting scenes.

Comedy abounds especially in the character of Chaucer who comes off as a medieval Don King with a severe gambling problem. In fact, this is one of the few movies where I enjoyed watching almost all of the characters. They all had their own unique charm and were fun to watch.

This movie gets a big fat Jack!! Excellent.
