I have never before played a game this good. American McGee's Alice is quite simply one of the best games to come around in a while. You play the role of Alice, the title character from Alice in Wonderland. She is in a coma and to wake up, must travel through the strange lands in her head: Wonderland. Since she left Wonderland years ago, things have changed. The people and places that were simply odd in the past are now corrupted and evil, trying to kill her at every turn. There are some allies, though, like the Cheshire Cat and the Mock Turtle, among others. But on the whole, something twisted has taken hold the entire place and Alice must put an end to it, in order to wake. This game is violent. Oh, so violent. Alice starts off with a knife and hacks her way through the card guards, giant ants, bees, flowers and anything else you could imagine from the Alice books. Along the way, you pick up other weapons, such as a croquet mallet, explosive jack-in-the-boxes and Demon Dice. The bosses are pretty scary: the Duchess who chews on you if you get too close, the Mad Hatter, and ultimately, the Red Queen. Who would have thought to make a game out of the story of Alice? American McGee, that's who. It takes a twisted mind to come up with a game like this, but I sure am glad someone did. Graphically, this game cannot be beat. The levels are beautiful to look at, the characters so nice and some of the effects in the backgrounds are simply gorgeous. The music and sounds effects are perfectly spine tingling. The only thing that should have been improved is the controls. I never much like the "W-S-A-D" control system for movement, because it gets awkward at times. One of the most ingenious things to ever come along in a 3rd person game, however, is the jumping system in this game. When standing still, a pair of spinning footprints are placed ahead of you, forecasting where you would land if you were to jump. Purely incredible. If you want a game that will wow your senses, and if your system is up to the insane specs required, you must pick up American McGee's Alice immediately. You must. It's your duty.
