Why Miaka is Not a Mary Sue

Miaka is NOT a Mary Sue. I'm sorry if the majority
disagrees with me, but she's not. I'll admit,
she has some very Sue-ish traits. But she also has some
very good qualities, which people tend to overlook,
trivialize, or make out to be annoying, stupid flaws.

"She's too sweet and perky!" So it's a crime
to be happy? Or does it make her "unrealistic"?
Would she be LESS of a Mary Sue if she was abused,
angry, bitter, and always wearing black? Is being
happy and having a positive attitude, and caring
for others "not realistic enough"? Considering what she
has to put up with in the manga regarding school and
feeling like she isn't good enough, I'm impressed that
she can act so happy most of the time! And remember
that she's an ANIME CHARACTER! She's not
supposed to be the perfect shining example of realism!

Sure, she has her bad qualities: She's not very
bright, she's a glutton, and she can be too
forgiving. (I would've threatened to emasculate
Tamahome if he ever broke MY arm again!), but even
so...she's kind, selfless, willing to learn from her
mistakes, and doesn't hold grudges. If I were Yui,
I'd be very grateful to have her as a best friend!

People say she's a slut just because more than
one guy had a thing for her-uh, no. Let's count
em again: Hotohori was in love with the idea of having her,
Nuriko loved her as a sister, Tasuki's thing in the OAVs
was more of a crush...Amiboshi was just really kind to
her and seemed to have a thing for her, but it was
kinda nothing...so, that leaves Tamahome. ONE guy. :P
If only people would take stuff into consideration, jeez!

Just because she happens to have a few MS-ish
traits does not make her one! She wasn't perfect,
not EVERYONE loved her, and contrary to popular
belief, she DID work for her good fortune-summoning
Suzaku, becoming friends with her Seishi, getting
Yui back, keeping her relationship with Tamahome,
etc. Maybe in the beginning she was lazy and wanted
everything to come easily, but then along came a
little something called Character Growth, which helped
her transform into a more mature, motivated person.

Notice how Yui is transformed into an angsty victim,
tries to kill herself, and doesn't even try to fight
on her own? She just hides behind Nakago, lets Suboshi
guard her with his life and doesn't even thank him that
often, and sulks about how EEEEVIL Miaka is, how coldly
she betrayed her, how she wants to grab Tamahome away
from her and make her life miserable. Aren't those some
of the biggest traits of an Angsty Mary Sue? And yet,
no one says Yui's a Sue. Keep in mind that she AND Miaka
both entered the book, and were given a magical/mystical
role in a new world. And they had relatively good-looking
men admiring them.

I like Yui, but she's an angsty, stubborn bitch for a lot of
the series. And yet, fans go on about how she's SO cool,
how much more mature and pretty she is than Miaka, how much
more REALISTIC she is. Um, no. She's ALSO an anime character
and not MEANT to be 100% realistic. It's a fantasy shoujo
anime, not an animated portrayal of REAL LIFE! If it were,
Nuriko would be soaking his hands in tubs of ice after
punching those walls. :P

And if Yui were really "the mature one", wouldn't she have
LISTENED to Miaka and admitted that she was being a stubborn
ass about everything? Think about that.

If you don't like Miaka, that's not my problem. I really
don't care if people don't agree with me. But I also find
it annoying when people blissfully ignore a character's
good qualities or harp on their bad ones so they can happily
bash away at them like a punching bag.
