Makala Weyr: History

Like most Pern fandom clubs, Makala Weyr has set up an Alternate timeline so that our version of Pern and Anne McCaffrey's version of Pern are safely set apart to avoid any copyright infringement.  Makala Weyr is set in an Alternate 10th Pass; below, you'll find the complete history of our club.  Remember that when writing stories for Makala Weyr, you've got to play by this history.  :)

After the first Threadfall and the extreme volcanic disruptions on Pern, the settlers decided to move North to the more stable grounds located there.  Fort Weyr and Fort Hold were both the first locations founded in the North.  For the next several hundred years, the people of Pern spread out and colonized the Northern Continent.  Many Holds sprang up - Telgar, Igen, Ista, Belior, and Syvlien Holds being the major locations.  (Please do note that Benden and Ruatha Hold were never created.)

The events of Anne McCaffrey's Sixth Pass Pern did occur in our timeline; Moreta's fated ride, the death of Orlith, Leeri, and Holth, the epidemic of influenza that nearly devastated the world are incorporated into our timeline.  However, after so many intervals and passes, these people and their actions have faded into obscurity and are, at best, legends to the men and women of Makala Weyr.  Any events written by Anne McCaffrey thereafter did not occur in our timeline.  :)

Makala Weyr itself was formed shortly before the Eighth Pass, when the Weyrleaders realized that the established Weyrs were getting overcrowded and a new Weyr would need to be formed to hold the dragonriders.  Makala Weyr was born in the area of Syvili Hold, just a few turns before Thread fell again and the Eight Pass began.

During the Ninth Pass, the Weyrleaders of Fort Weyr sent a small group to the Southern Continent to explore the possibility of recolonization.  Fire Flame Weyr was founded in the South, as well as several Halls and Holds.  During their explorations of the Continent, the Weyrleaders of Fire Flame Weyr uncovered what would prove to be the greatest discovery of their time - indeed, for many generations thereafter.  AIVAS was still working, and the entity helped the people of Pern to advance in technology.  Limited electricity was introduced, as well as basic plumbing and slightly improved medical abilities.  Such improvements flourished across the continent, but, before they could become fully implimented, the time of AIVAS was ended as the machine's solar power was weak and eventually ineffective.

The Ninth Pass ended and the interval began.  Electricity in the form of old-fashioned lamps was available in the kitchens, the Caverns, and the weyrs and quarters of high ranking people in the heirarchy of Pern, such as the goldriders, Weyrleaders, and Lord Holders.  Plumbing provided hot water for small baths in private bathing chambers, although the thermally heated bathing pools were (and are!) still used for the common people of Pern

The Tenth Pass neared, and as it came, so did social advancement.  People were educated enough to write; the Harpers had created paper based on some information saved from AIVAS, making hides almost obsolete.  Further advances were forstalled by the coming of Threadfall, however, but the quality of education was kept up.

The Pass was going well, with few casualties, and the Weyrs were all in full form.  In Makala Weyr itself, things were going well.  The Weyrwoman, Mirkali, rider of golden Elbaneth, had guided her Weyr competently for nearly twenty turns, having taken over from the past Weyrwoman twenty turns into the Tenth Pass.  There were several golds housed in Makala Weyr at the time.  However, disaster almost always strikes, and it did forty-five turns into the Pass.  Goldrider Mirkali died during childbirth, and her golden Elbaneth suicided.  Irya, rider of golden Tutakenth took over the position of Senior Weyrwoman of Makala Weyr.  Weyrleader S'rion, bronze Soleith, who had been Weyrleader for several decades with his Weyrmate, Mirkali, became Weyrleader once again when Soleith flew Tutakenth.  The Weyrleader was 65 turns of age.  The new Senior Weyrwoman was not yet 30.

The Junior Weyrwoman, Iorata, rider of golden Adrenth, was a steady, kindly woman, a good friend and ally of Weyrwoman Irya.  After Irya had served as Werywoman for only two turns, Iorata, too, met with misfortune.  During Fall, Adrenth was so badly scored that she went between, never to emerge again.  The Weyr was in need of another goldrider, as, with Iorata's death, Irya's Tutakenth was the only queen dragon at the Weyr.  Arrangements were made for a transfer, and Coleva, rider of golden Araxith was transfered from Azov Weyr to  Makala Weyr.

Shortly thereafter, Irya's Tutakenth clutched a golden egg.  Skyth, a shining golden beast, small and dainty, burst from her shell and slowly chose her new rider.  The entire Weyr was surprised when the golden beauty decided on Alaeja, a passionate, icy young woman with a dark past.

Currently,
Makala Weyr has two mature goldriders and the Weyrling rider Alaeja.  There are only three turns left before the end of Threadfall, and the entire Weyr is holding its collective breath and wondering what will happen to dragonkind after Thread ends once again...

Interested?  Wonderful!  We'd love to have you among our ranks here at Makala Weyr!
