Welcome to my page, where you will see some pictures of my hometown, Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

Johnstown is situated in the Laurel Highlands, a branch of the Southern Allegheny Mountains. Johnstown is approximately 70 miles east of Pittsburgh and 240 miles west of Philadelphia.

Johnstown is a middle-class town, once a very strong industrial center for America's steel industry, with a population of some 30,000 people, more or less. When the steel industry collapsed in America, much of the town's industry went elsewhere, leaving the town somewhat hobbled in an economic slump which continues today, some 40 years after the steel industry fell apart here in this country. However, the spirit of the people here is unbreakable; proven several times over, beginning in 1889, with a horrible flood which nearly erased the town from the face of the Earth. The flood killed over 2,000 people, about 1,000 people were never accounted for, and the remaining 27,000 inhabitants were left homeless. That never stopped the people of Johnstown from rebuilding though. The flood left only a few things behind, most remarkably, the town's churches and steel mills. Her spirit was not broken by the horrible disaster. This was not to be the last flood Johnstown would see though, two more of a lesser degree occurred. One in 1936 and the other in 1977. Johnstown returned once more from the clutches of fate. Johsntown was founded in the early 1800's by a Dutch immigrant named Josef Schantz, who later changed his name to Joseph Johns, leaving his mark on this glorious town for all future generations of Johnstownians to remember. Below are just a few of the picturesque wonders of this town. The many remarkable sights of this town are too numerous to put here, but a few of the most beautiful images I could find are included for your enjoyment.

The city of Johnstown sprawls out of in the valleys of the Laurel Highlands.

Johnstown's most famous landmark is actually unique in the world. This is the Inclined Plane, the world's steepest vehicular inclined plane. An inclined plane is a device similar to a trolley which is used to traverse steep grades, like the one shown here.

As you can see, the Inclined Plane is a really unique device. Travellers and tourists can take a ride on this device during the summer touring season. Two trolleys can traverse this grade at once, as shown above.

This page is not done yet. It will grow over time as I find more to add to it, but for now simply enjoy the awesome things included so far.
