HISTORY
In 2005, the Major Velocity Cycling Club was created and named after the first African American to win a World Professional Cycling Championship,  Marshall Major Taylor.  On August 10, 1899, Taylor won the world 1-mile championship in Montreal, defeating Boston rival Tom Butler.  Taylor is the second black world champion athlete, after bantamweight boxer George Dixon's title fights in 1890-91. In 1899 and 1900, Taylor was the US Bicycle Sprint Champion.  When Taylor began setting world records in 1898, it was unusual for an American to achieve that level of performance. Professional cycling, at the end of the 19th century, was dominated by the Europeans. What made Taylor's achievement so historic and special was that he was a man of color, an African American. It is in his spirit,  his unwavering dedication and love of cycling  that Major Velocity Cycling was formed.
