And now, the...
Amazing
Dancing
Gruesome Twosome!!
My friend Angie opened her ballet school in Schwanenberg (next village to us) in September 2003. She has a fair few classes, but since it's a new school, most of them are quite young and inexperienced. At some point right after New Year, Angie announced to the world that the school would be doing a summer show, on the 6th June. The theme would be the Four Seasons (Die Vier Jahreszeiten) and all classes would participate (if they wanted).

I checked with the gruesomes.

They wanted.

Very much.

And so the rehearsals began. Eveline's group (Pre-Primary) were to be Sternentaler (stars) for a Winter scene and Saskia's group (Primary) would do the Bauern Tanz (Farmers Dance) for Autumn. Saskia's group have the added attraction of the sole male member of the school

Collecting Eveline after class one day, my brain decided that being a working mother of two, writing a novel and (new hobby) making stuff out of wood wasn't enough for me.

Oh no.

Before I knew it, I had volunteered myself for sewing. An offer, it must be said, which was fallen upon by Angie as if she were a thirsty man in a desert who had just stumbled upon an olympic sized swimming pool full of sweet water.

I'll let you know she said.

A few weeks later, I collected Eveline from her friend's house after ballet, and was confronted by a bagful of stuff which resolved itself into nine gold skirts and nine shiny camisole tops which needed fininshing off.

Needless to say, I finished them with only a week to spare and, bless her, Angie gave me a name check in the programme as thanks.

But on to the show.

As well as her Autumn dance, Saskia danced the part of a cat, first in a scene involving some really cute little mice with some gigantic apples, then in the scene where some children are read the story of some stars. After the first part, she had to come back on again in the very next dance, after a quick change, the dress rehearsal was a disaster, but in true theatrical form: everything was alright on the night.

And so... on to the photos. We were not allowed, thank goodness, to take pictures during the show itself. These snaps were taken during the dress rehearsal. As soon as they're available, I'll put the professional pictures up. Until now... please give a round of applause to my talented daughters!
Eveline and her friend Antonia (note the fab outfits!) wait for their turn. This was before boredom set in...
Eveline - slowly discovering the attraction of being a 'star' of the stage.
The gloves were slightly long - but the effect was good. Saskia the (not at all scary) cat. I forgot to mention that we spent a small fortune on hair gel, hair spray and hairpins... but somehow we got both sets of hair into acceptably tight buns.
