Surf Club
The civic engagement project was a project that was ment for the students, to pair up or in a group of three and explor the different clubs or orginaztions in and around PSU. My partner's name was Jenn Asai and we decided to look up the Surf club. We both had different reasons to do it, but one main reason we chose it was because neither one of us knew that Portland State had a surf club. It was interesting to talk to one of the founding members and find out what he had to say about the club. Here is our converstion. *This conversation was through email*

1) What would you say the focus of the Surf Club is?

To surf.

2) Does the Club have any goals?

The club goal is very simple. To connect surfers with other surfers. When
you live in the Valley and can't make it to the beach everyday it can be hard
to find other surfers. I, myself, surfed the beaches of Oregon for over a year
before I found anyone else from Portland that surfer. Even though I was
constantly at the local surf shops and knew several people that surfed. It is
hard to match up schedules. The goal of the club is to use our website, the
listserv and a growing list of members to help surfer find other surfers. It's
pretty simple really.

3)When was the club founded?

The club started informally last summer (2003) and became an official club
last term (winter 2004). David Nunn started the club and I responded to one of
his flyers. He was a student down in Corvallis, which has an established surf
club, and when he came to PSU he was disappointed to find that there was not a
club. So he started one. I, Jacob Redding, became the first member and helped
to recruit more people and to make it official. Currently we have about 25 or
so members and a lot of interest. We haven't had that many "official" events
but were working on it.

4) And are there club officers? if so, who?

We don't really have any officers, but there is myself (Jacob Redding) and
David Nunn. David Nunn started the club as an unofficial informal club, I just
helped me make it an offical campus club, establish a budget and get things
rolling for next year.

Let me know if you have any other questions. I you happen to know Alice
Mitchell, she might be able to offer some advice and help you with your project
too.
