This is a play written by me which had to fit in a 10 minute time-frame, use no props and no additional actors. This particular piece won first place at the Southern Indiana Regional meet and at the Indiana State Forensics competition after carrying me through a perfect season. In it, Narcissus, having accidentally drowned himself, stares mournfully into the river Styx...only to find that his lover is also dead! As for the performance of it, Narcissus walked like Haldir and talked like a cross between Eddie Izzard and Nathan Lane. They were void of hope as she clutched the bright jewel to her breast and sent her final prayers to the Valar for her husband and her sons, and then she closed them, accepting her death even as she flung herself to meet it. Maitimo thought he saw her hang in the air for an impossible moment before she vanished through the air and into the wild sea. Then, Elwing had fallen to her sad doom, taking the fate of Fanros remaining sons with her. The horror that had turned Maitimo to ice as he watched the fair woman take her own life was soon consumed by his fiery anger, the legacy of his father which lived in him. Maitimo charged back into the dying battle, enraged by the loss of the Silmaril he had been so close to gaining. Only a few fighters of Doriaths once strong host remained, but they were both valiant and desperate, and it made them fell. Seeing Maitimo, they knew him for Fanros eldest and charged at him, but his blade met them ruthlessly. After committing such sins as black as his, Maitimo knew that mercy in battle was only folly. But he was still shaken and his strokes were wild, and, being outnumbered, he soon found himself born down under the onslaught. Crying aloud, he swung his blade carelessly at an attacking Elf. He meant to defend himself against the others blade, but swung too high. The blade fell and cut his thigh, but did little damage, for Elfs bleeding right hand still clutched it. The Elf had fallen, his fair face stricken with pain and shock as he stared at the stump of his wrist. Blood from the wound stained Maitimos armour as he lay, trembling from his deed. The Elfs companions had stalled as well, stunned by the gruesome sight before them, and Maitimo was able to gain his feet during the brief respite, but he found that many opponents were gathered about him, and he could not cut his way out of the throng. One dagger struck true and cut through the cloth that bound his truncated arm, slicing the tender flesh. Ambarto and Ambarusso had been fighting not far from their brother, and heard his terrible scream. They came to his aid, but even as they called to him to give him hope they turned their backs on their own foes, and they were felled by Doriaths archers. Makalaur saw this and attacked with ferocity that did not befit his gentle ways, cutting down Elf after Elf, alongside his brother, until all save those last two sons of Fanro had fallen. Maitimo and Makalaur ran swiftly to the place where their youngest brothers lay. Makalaur, seeing that Ambarusso was not yet dead, drew forth his knife and set to work cutting out the arrows that had pierced him. Ambarusso wept silently at the pain of it and dug his fingernails into the dirt, but then Maitimos grief- stricken cry shattered the quiet. Is this what it must cost to lose a Silmaril? he raged, and threw down his blade in despair. Ambarto is dead, then, Ambarusso said calmly, and pain no longer shadowed his voice. Let me be, brother, he said to Makalaur. If it is the fate of Fanros sons to be lost to the Everlasting Darkness, then I would not let my brother endure it alone. And so he died. Maitimo stumbled onward through the dark forest, his brother Makalaur following close behind. If they had repented truly of the Kinslaying, their repentance was now made doubly void, for their Oath had now driven them to three unforgivable acts. Without warning, they had attacked what remained of Doriath. Elwing had lost her life fleeing their wrath and the rest of Doriaths people lay slain. Maitimos men had placed the twins on biers and born them back to their camp, but Maitimo and Makalaur could not follow, for though his wounds were bleeding and needed attention he had wondered into the woods as one struck blind. Makalaur had followed him, worried that his brothers fey mood had turned at last to madness, until Maitimo finally sank to his knees and clutched his stomach with his singular left hand, then wretched violently. Makalaur knelt beside him and embraced him as his own tears began to flow, then loosed his broken voice in a tortured lament for Ambarto and Ambarusso, but the dirge was heard not by Maitimo alone. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ |
