Augustus began his Civil War service as an assistant surgeon in the Second Maine Volunteers leaving his pregnant wife behind. The feeling in Bangor was that the war would be over in six weeks and Augustus just might have made it back to see the birth of his daughter, Helen Agnes Hamlin, July 21, 1861. However, just four days later on Sunday, July 21, Augustus had work to do at the First Battle of Bull Run and may not have yet known of the birth of his first child. If you have an interest in Bangor and the Civil War, I'd like to ask your opinion of a 12-page summary of Augustus's Civil War record. Please email me at the address given on the "HOME" page and I will send you a copy of the current version. |
