Persephone and Demeter: Autumn Equinox or Parting Ritual |
Hillary and I adapted this ritual from "The Illustrated Guide to Wicca" by Tony and Aileen Grist. It could also be easily modified for use as a parting ritual for any mother and daughter, whether for a new job in a distant city, a new marriage, or any occasion that leads to protracted absence. First, deck the altar with natural flourishes of autumn --purple asters, goldenrod (be sure you're not allergic,) mums, tall yellowed grasses, colored leaves, or acorns. Next, cast your circle. If you don't yet know how to do that, please use our link to |

"Cherchante's Forgotten Wine" to learn how. Say aloud together, "Day and night are equal." Light your candles and incense. Say together, "The darkness grows apace and we turn inward. The fallen seeds rests in the earth. Kore takes leave of her mother, Demeter, and returns to the Underworld, where she becomes Persephone and reigns as queen among the dead. 'If winter comes, can spring be far behind?'" Raise energy now, saying, "Hear the thunder of the wheels as the tyrant comes who steals Kore away from the world of men. Dead leaves tumble from the trees. It will snow and it will freeze ere the godess comes again." Next, the daughter may invoke Persephone, saying, "Persephone, flower-faced maiden of spring, innocent Kore, loving daughter of Demeter, you who have gladdened the spring and summer fields, come to us; speak to us through this your priestess who loves you." The mother invokes Demeter, saying,"Demeter, rich overflowing bower of September, you who have measured the rain and sun to nurture your precious child, come to us now and speak to us through this your priestess who loves you." Mother and daughter face each other. The mother says, "Leave not the dances, my child. Leave not for this tyrant's kingdom under the earth, where white-faced ghosts stare blankly. Dwell in the sunlit valleys and strow flowers." The daughter replies,"I toss the seed from my skirts. The meadows die that will bloom in the spring. The winds give tongue. The dead leaves fall." Brightening and radiating energy, the daughter continues,"My husband's harsh. I bring the two worlds under one scepter. Wait til the seed I've scattered has grown to flowers and grass again, and we shall have fine time out in the sun." Mother and daughter embrace. They share cakes and wine and close the circle. |

Hi! I am the maiden half of our duo (Persephone). And, like Persphone, I am separated from my mother (Demeter) for about the next six months. Unlike Persephone, however, I'm separated by an hour's drive and a long wait until I get out of the Underworld. (Ask anyone who's a high school senior right now - it really is an Underworld!). And I miss my Mama-chama! Anyway, here is a love spell I wrote and cast myself. You will need: A pink or red candle( any form will do, but I used a taper) An apple branch A mirror A chalice filled with sweet liquid Sweet-smelling perfume to annoint the candle (I used rose perfume) A rose A paper with the qualities you desire in a mate wriiten on it On a Friday night when the moon is full, set up your altar, cast the circle and clear your mind of any unwanted thoughts Now, holding the mirror in your nondominant hand, recite the words on the paper: Mine goes as follows: In Your eyes I desire: A man of water, wind and fire, long dark hair to twine in my fingers, A touch that will always linger. A man of both the sword and the heart, but who knows his part and the time. He shall be wise, yet lighthearted, sweet yet restrained - a duality contained. A male Witch he must be, between three years of me. Unruly and willing to fight, but knowing when the time is right. A lover of cats and children, Peace will reign over our household of love. As this candle burns, so will my true love's feelings for me grow. When I am ready, draw him to me. This is my Will, so mote it be! Pluck the petals from the rose and place roughly one half of then at the base of your candleholder. Sprinkle the rest in the chalice and light the candle. Now, sit down and, holding the mirror in your nondominant hand, scry for the appearance of your lover, if you're lucky, you'll see him. Let the candle burn and leave the chalice sitting on the altar overnight. |
