THE BODHISATTVA SUTRA
HOW TO LIVE THIS LIVE SEVEN TIMES FREER
November 23,1993 at Moscow University

Today I'd like to discuss how one can live this live seven times freer.
This, of course, presupposes that you believe in the definitions of primitive Buddhism and Yoga because my discussion will be based on the teachings of Buddhism and Yoga.
Before we begin to discuss how we can live this seven times freer or seven times more at our own will, we must consider whether it is possible for us to live more that seven times freer. In order to live more that seven times freer, in other words, to attain perfect freedom, we need to transform ourselves into a completely different being. I will discuss this briefly at the end of the lecture. Today, I will mainly discuss with you about how by doing a simple practice, you will be able to live seven times freer, and will give you concrete examples based on scientific proofs.
There is a Tibetan Buddhist text known as the Bardo Thodol.
The Bardo Thodol is a book which deals with our death, intermediate state and rebirth. In short, it tells us what kind of mental disposition we should have in the intermediate state and what we should do in order to avoid births in the three lower realms and be reborn in a higher world. These intermediate states include our dreams, Samadhi (deep meditation), and the existence in the womb, as well as the state between our death and next live before we enter the womb. Of course, if you are to be reborn in a higher world, especially in Maha Nirvana ( The Great Realm of Total Destruction of Afflictions) you will not experience those other intermediate states described in the book. You will not be reborn in a womb.
The book says that our senses become seven times stronger, that is, vivid and real, in the intermediate state. Our consciousness becomes seven times clearer than what one experiences in this life. This consciousness is the ultimate state of delta waves.
Let me explain briefly about brain waves. Brain waves, represented by EEG (electroencephalography), are very small electrical currents generated by the activity of the cerebral cortex, and can be detected by an electro encephalograph, which is connected to electrodes attached to the scalp. The instrument reads fluctuations in the electric potential of the brain. The recorded brain waves can be classified into seven types. The aim of measuring brain waves is to scientifically verify the relation between mental conditions and activity. For example, in the case of an epileptic, a special type of wave pattern called a spike is recorded. When the subject is asleep, generally, he generates theta waves. If is in deep sleep, delta waves usually recorded.
Brain waves occurring at a frequency over 30 hertz are called gamma waves. Those occurring between 18 and 30 hertz are beta waves; those between 14 and 18 hertz are medium-fast waves; 14 and 8 hertz, alpha waves; 8 and 4 hertz, theta waves; and those having a frequency between 4 and 0.5 hertz are called delta waves. Anything below this is considered brain death.
When your brain waves are brought close to 0.5 hertz, you will experience the intermediate state while alive in this world. The meaning of brain activity, the function of brain waves, can be interpreted as the primary projection of the nature of our mind, in other worlds, the deepest state of our consciousness. And the meaning of the fast that the brain is generating fast and rough waves such as beta waves or gamma waves is that nature of our mind, our deepest consciousness is projected,it becomes diffused. It is like having a distorted mirror which reflects things the least accuracy. This is why the attachment of our goal and the experience of true joy depend on how we can project the nature of our minds in this world without any distortion, n other words, how we can generate delta waves or change our brain waves so that they are close to the state of brain death.
My EEG record shows that my brain waves have a frequency below 0.05 hertz. Doctors say that it is an inconceivable phenomenon that I am alive and talking to you today. They say I should be dead. But this is the state in which the primary projection of the deepest level of consciousness manifests in this world most accurately. In other worlds, I have the cleanest mirror. This state is described in Buddhist texts as the state of a Buddha who has attained mirror-like wisdom. Dont you think the people who lived over 2,000years ago were wise? They used the very same word mirror. Essentially, when the deepest level of consciousness of each of you here today, the very working of this consciousness, is projected in this world without any distortion, the working of your mind in that consciousness is perfectly accomplished
Let me give you an example. If the brain wave frequency of a very emotional and violent person who always gets into fights and speaks rough words is brought close to 4.3 hertz, in other words, if his EEG shifts from gamma waves to around lower of end of theta waves or upper end of delta waves, he will become seven times happier. Or a person who is usually in control of his emotions, in other words, one who has a frequency range at the level of medium-fast waves, when this person begins to constantly generate delta waves with a frequency between 1 and 2 hertz, he or she will be seven times more satisfied with life.
Now let us think about human happiness once more. You were born in this world and the cause of your birth was desire. In Buddhism and Yoga, the result of your desire is called Karma. If your deepest consciousness, the cause of your cyclic existence (rebirths) is projected in this world in purest form, or in a form very close to it, you will be able to life the way you like. In short, the point is how accurately your deepest thoughts, the very cause of your birth in this world, are projected. And the expression of its projection is the workings of the brain and the manifestation of phenomena. If you are able to stop the working of your mind by relative meditation, that is, by applying an antidote (ideas which are opposite to the ones you have in your mind in meditation), and stop the activities of your brain completely, you will eventually be able to realize all your wishes.
This process is known as the repetition of deliberation and examination in Buddhist and Yogic texts. When the process of deliberation examination is completed, the brain waves shift from theta waves to delta waves. A few hundreds of my disciples have attained this stage. From here, we must proceed to the state in which delta waves disappear and there are no more brain waves. We need to go into Samadhi to attain this state. And when Samadhi is perfected, our brain waves become completely flat.
In Buddhist texts, the person who has attained this stage is described as having destroyed all the illusions of line to life or having nothing lift to do in this world.
This is because our deepest consciousness, our True Self, manifests in this world. We attain perfect freedom, happiness and joy at this point.
I believe that you now have a good understanding of why you should practice, why you should meditate. In short, the aim of practice is to make the gross functioning of the brain into a subtle land, and finally stop it completely.
I hope that the life you wish for will materialize soon in its complete form by the virtue of this lecture.

Questions and Answers

Q: What land of practice should be done to bring my brain waves close to the level of delta waves?
A: Bringing your waves close to the level of theta waves or delta waves does not mean that you have no such waves yourself. You must have had the experience of fulfilling your unreal desires in your dreams. This dream state is the state waves. Having a deep and sound sleep where you remember nothing, this is the state of delta waves. Saints generate theta waves and delta waves, or waves at frequencies even lower than these, when they are fully awake, in a conscious state.
The best and quickest technique you can use to attain this state is to awaken your Kundalini. When Kundalini is awakened, your brain waves first change from medium-fast waves to alpha waves. After the awakening of Kundalini, by pounding into your brain that data which works as an antidote to your temporary desires, alpha waves gradually change to theta waves, then to delta waves.
There is another way. This way, or path, is called living this life by thoughts which transcend living itself. Beings are born in this world because of their superficial desires. In this path, you cultivate compassion for those beings who suffer because of these superficial desires. By cultivating compassion, instead of building your mind on desires, you build it on compassion for all beings. The goal of this practice is the same as the first technique, the cessation of desire. The cessation of desire here does not mean the denial of freedom, happiness and joy inherent in your deepest consciousness, your True Self. It is the cessation of temporary, or, momentary desire.
