Macquarie Uni Men's Hockey Club was
formed in 1971 and in 2001 expanded to four teams for the first time.
We are a friendly club who believe
that the beautiful game of hockey should be celebrated - on and off the field.
We currently have 3 teams in Premier B
of the Sydney Hockey Association and 1 team in 3rd Division.
Traditionally our 1st grade
has been strong, with the lower grades providing avenues for social and
semi-serious hockey. This dynamic has changed in recent years to the extent
that 2nd and 3rd grades have emerged from a long
hibernation to become finals participants.
Members are a mix of loyal
ex-students, outsiders who live locally, and young students. All players mix
well providing a dynamic, friendly and supportive atmosphere in which every
individual endeavours to play hockey to the best of their ability… yet not
forgetting to have FUN in the process!
Each year we send a team to the Eastern Conference
Games (ECGs) in a bid to qualify for the Australian Uni Games (AUGs). In 2001
the team showed their determination and raw talent when, for the first time,
they qualified at ECGs to compete against the best 16 University teams in the
country at AUGs. At the AUGs, the team played with courage and tenacity against
teams with superior funding and resources (such as team physios, multiple subs
and even substitute goalkeepers!). The team eventually finished 5th
overall. This was the highest placing for a team from NSW or the ACT in the
competition. In 2002, the team is aiming to do even better!
Our nickname is THE MAGUTS, stemming
from the early 1980s when carnivals around NSW used to brace themselves for the
annual arrival of the Macquarie And Gordon United Touring Squad.
