ECG Report 2001
The
2001 ECG tour to Coffs Harbour was without doubt the most successful tour ever for
the MAGUTS, this despite playing in conditions rarely seen at previous ECG
tours of hot days and balmy nights.
The
tour started of on a bright note after defeating CSU Bathurst 1-0 despite
starting with only 10 men and at one point having 3 players sent off the
field. An exceptional display of
carnival hockey.
The
following day saw matches against hometown ring ins Southern Cross TAFE (1-1)
and Sydney Uni (0-0). The final pool
match played at 9am Wednesday morning against Cumberland was for a place at
AUG’s and the semi finals. The Maguts
stated strongly scoring two early goals and were never headed eventually
sealing top spot in the pool with a convincing 4-0 win. The remainder of the day was spent consuming
copious amounts of alcohol, contacting past players, and attempting, somewhat
unsuccessfully to write a new team song.
Wednesday
proved to be one of the most memorable days on tour and one which will be
difficult to top.
With a
spot at AUG’s guaranteed the final two games were played with far less
commitment than the previous games. A
9-1 loss to UTS in the quarterfinal and a 2-0 defeat by Southern Cross TAFE put
the Maguts in 4th position, our best performance at ECG’s.
Off
field highlights from the week included;
·
Klimmy’s special talent for finding
women who were already taken, even married women
·
A broken door which quickly became the
local graffiti board, which despite requests from the owners we didn’t bring
home
·
The now mandatory touring suits
The
ECG tour will go in Magut history as one of the greatest and had a major impact
on our success at AUG’s.
Congratulations to every one how played at Coffs and special mention to
the women’s team how provided great support all week, for some more than
others.
