| Surfing in Western Japan | |||||||||||||||||||||
| With the exception of the Seito Inland Sea, there is rideable surf at some time of the year on every coast in Japan. The quality varies from poor to world class depending on the location and season. Surfing in Western Japan is concentrated on the Pacific sides of the islands of Kyushu and Shikoku, the areas around Wakayama Prefecture on the Pacific side of Honshu, and the Sea of Japan areas from Yamaguchi Prefecture to the coastlines of Hokuriku. The information here concerns mostly the areas on Shikoku. The island of Shikoku offers a variety of surf points from the City of Naruto in Tokushima Prefecture to Nakamura Town in Western Kochi Prefecture. You can find everything from easy beginner beach breaks, to challenging "locals only" river mouth tubes. Typhoon season, which stretches from July to early October, brings the best waves, but late fall and spring offer rideable surf as well. Winter tends to be flat and skiing seems to be the prefered option. The scenery of some of Shikoku's beaches is just gorgeous and the delightfully warm water which arrives in the summer season makes a trip to the beach the perfect respite from the sweltering heat of summer. |
