| Rock climbing opportunities abound on the tiny island of Shikoku. Well, I guess it isn't that tiny. Shikoku is roughly the same size as the state of New Jersey. A climber can find decent routes on a variety of rock. Granite, limestone, basalt, and sandstone crags contain a variety of sport and traditional lines, as well as numerous bouldering problems, many yet to be discovered. The scenery ranges from dramatic sea cliffs to forest shrouded mountain crags. Crowds are unheard of, and the locals are super friendly and eager to share. While not exactly a trip destination, the curious or stranded climber will be pleasantly surprised by the climbing found on the fourth largest island in Japan. |
