Swedish Bonfires beats B��gg The ancient Swedish tradition of celebrating the end of the winter and the beginning of spring with great bonfires and partying did also this year take place on the 30:th of April. I had the pleasure of beeing in Sweden during this holiday and for me as a Swede it means more to the entire population attend bonfire parties all over the country rather than burning just one Swiss snowman, a "B��gg". Said to be a family attraction I have to admit that the Swiss spring party with it's kid parades and tivolies offers more of family activities than it's Swedish counterpart which for many Swedes incorporates the possibility of an intake of alcohol of monumental proportions. Also, in Sweden we celebrated the spring with 7 degrees Celsius and rain which in any other country but Norway would be considered winter...
"B��gg" burns for 17 Minutes The "B��gg" burned for 16 minutes and 45 seconds this year. The B��gg is a snow man, about three metres tall with gun powder in his head. He is being burnt every year at "Sechesl��ten" a traditional spring feast similar to the Swedish "Valborg" (held later on april 30th) The Z�ricans forecast the summer with the help of the B��gg. The longer he burns, the worse the summer will be. The burning time is calculated til his head blows up! Last year he burned for 25 minutes and we had a really lousy summer. This year he consequently predicted a rather fine summer. Three years ago he burned for sensational three minutes and gave one of the best summers ever. Well, I hope he was rigth this year too...
