MY FAVORITE AMERICAN HERO
by a 14 yr. old named Michael

It's strange. When I think of who my favorite American Hero could be, I would never have thought to look at my own family.

Then I think back to September 11, 2001. My cousin Thomas is a fireman for the New York State Department.

He was not there when the towers fell because he was on the road heading to the disaster. When he got there, he said it was like "hell on earth." He worked day and night retrieving bodies.

One night, while he was searching, he almost gave up hope. He was so tired and the smell around him was making him sick. He found a woman who was buried alive. As  he pulled her out of the rubble, she begged him over and over to look for her coworkers.

After, when he made sure that she was taken to the hospital, he spent the rest of the night searching for the rest of her people. He knew that there was no hope for them, but he had made a promise and he was going to keep it. He did eventually find some of her coworkers but unfortunately, none had suurvived.

I am very  proud of the fact that the same blood that runs through Thomas S. runs through me.
