make are images expressing universal human experience, whether the subject be real or
fictioned. The images are not conceptually planned but grow conceptually and symbolically in
the creation process. The past year the portraits have been primarily concerned with the
human comprehension and experience of "separation", emotionally, intellectually, and physically.
The portraits express the separation between two individuals in a social interaction, the roles
they take on and the presumably� common understanding� they are moving towards; the unity and
autonomy between lovers and and intimate relationships; the inner experience of desire and
our instinctual or learned tendency to separate desire from our rational presentation of ourselves.
I am mostly concerned with the conflicts that these aspects of separation introduce, to what degree
these concepts are actual, invented during the process of separation, whether we are objective
or subjective in coping with our awareness of separation.
Most of the portraits are mixed media. I use many materials to make substantial
images that evoke a physicality that a viewer can relate to and somewhat embody.�� The materials
include house paint, spray paint, oil and water based paints, ink, gauze, joint compound,
polyurethane, wood, tar, wax, paper, hairnets, fabric, feathers, rust, and more.
�� I also make abstract oil and mixed media paintings using color, light, line and form to create spatial
images that reflect urban and natural landscapes.� These paintings are also concerned with the human experience of the world we live in. I attempt to capture the peripheral perception of environments.
