Magicland Farms is our family owned and family run 65+ acre farm where we grow an enormous range of different fruits and vegetables.  We are a bit unusual since we only sell what we grow or make ourselves or comes from the farm naturally.

Our season starts in June with strawberries and ends around Thanksgiving with apples, winter squash and decorative stuff including hand-made crafts.  The exact date of our closing depends upon the weather (we are an open-air farm stand) as well as our supply.
Same Day Freshness Is
Our Goal!
Corn picked Todayy.
What do we sell?  The answer is simple: Whatever we grow or make!  To be more specific, we always seem to raise sweet corn, delicious green and yellow beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, sweet and hot peppers, freshly hand dug sand grown red potatoes, apples, watermelons, summer and winter squash, pumpkins (all sizes including miniature and giant over 100 pounds), decorative Indiansoutyhviewstand corn, cut decorative sunflowers, and gourds.  We also frequently have strawberries, peas, pears, plums, eggplant, turnips,  apricots, black walnuts, pawpaws,  purple snap beans and parsnips.
Caution here: Just because we planted a crop doesn't
mean we can pick it!  Farmin' sort of rhymes with gamblin', you know.
We pick our vegetables
and even our apples everyday except Sunday.  Most of our vegetables , such as sweet corn, beans, cucumbers, summ
er squash and peppers are sold the same day we pick them!  Sometimes corn and beans are leftover (usually only when the crop received timely rains) and we sell them at a deep discount and label them accordingly.sweet Corn

A short personal anecdote about Newaygo County's healthy summer climate for children:
Magicland Farms founder (moi) was born and raised on the southwest side of Chicago (sort of).  My family's family doctor was also a close family friend apparently knowing my parents since childhood.  His name was Dr. Richard Ruda.  He was a good doctor and a real nice, kind  man.  (His son also became a doctor and practiced for years in SE Michigan.)  Back in the very early 50s, when I was just a tiny lad,  he mentioned to my mother  "Tommy isn't doing very well at all"  The exact problem he saw concerning my health evades me but my mother often mentioned this story to me, especially about her concern about Dr. Ruda's comments. Well, anyway, that summer 1951? our family spent mostly at our little very rustic cottage on Pickerel Lake.  Our only water we got was from our hand operated pitcher pump about 10 feet from the cottage.  (The following year my dad put in 1/3 hp Goulds electric pump so we then had running water.)    One reason we were able to do this was my dad operated a retail coal company which sold coal to homes , churches etc, although he returned to Chicago several times to check on the business, or lack thereof.  Summer, as you would imagine, was really slow.  We returned to Chicago just before school started in early September and a week or so later my mother took me to visit Doc Ruda.  After he saw me he said something like "What happened to Tommy!  He is doing so much better!"   Now here is the rest of the story.  One thing I learned through the years is to realize words are easy but actions are often more informative!  What did Doctor Ruda do after he saw the change in my health?  Well, the following summer, he took his whole family of five and rented a cabin (from Ernie Iacovoni, a good friend of ours) on Kimbal Lake.  This cabin was directly across the road from our property.  He then spent 3 weeks there.  He did this for several consecutive years.  Interesting, huh?

The big news with us this year is the electrified deer fence we are installing in selected areas.. For instance, the Magicland Kids planted 600 strawberry plants which now is encircled by an electric fence powered by a charger that uses a 12V car battery as a power source that will be kept charged with a solar photovoltaic panel.  I (big boss) already got inadvertently stung by the fence.  I got a worse shock working on the old 8N Ford's distributor while the key was on! We are also installing a fence around an acre of beans and an acre of watermelon.  If successful, we will greatly expand the fence's coverage.

The other news is we have started a new apple orchard with disease resistant apple varieties.  This orchard is sort of a test orchard in that I categorize it as a low-spray orchard that may turn into a no-spray orchard--we will see what takes place.  Another interesting thing is we have added over 10  new apple varieties!  I haven't  add them up yet but I think we are approaching 150 varieties of apple trees!  This assumes here that you count different strains of the same variety.  For instance, we have three different strains of Jonathans, five of Red Delicious, two of McIntorsh--even three different strains of Gala!

We Grow Over
Eighty
Varieties of Apples!
apples
apples Of course we grow the great tasting standards like Gala, Jonagold, Empire, Jonathan, Macs, Spartan, Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Roman Beauty, Paulared, Northern Spy, Idared, Granny Smith and Fuji But have you heard about Surprise (green skin/red flesh).  Or Splendour, which is unbelievably splendid?  Or how about the sweet and juicy RedGold?   I am sure you never heard of the Kindil Sinap!  No one has, although its quality and unique long shape should make it more widely grown.  You may have been looking for the Snow Apple, Strawberry Apple or perhaps Tolman Sweet or Golden Russet and couldn't find it anywhere!

Well, we've got them--most years anyway!! If you think apples are only ripe in the fall you will definitely want to try our Quinte or Melba which ripen in July!  Perhaps you like the taste of pineapple.  Well our Hawaii apple often has a hint of the flavor of this well-known tropical fruit.  Have you ever tried the new Zestar in August?  Well it's something worth trying--guaranteed.  It comes to us from Minnesota, developed by the same group that brought us the Honeycrisp revolution.  It is a cross of the Jonagold and Gravenstein. (I think?)  Some think Zestar is the second best tasting apple right next to Honeycrisp.  Personally, I still like my well-ripened Jonagold and my Empire and my Jonalicious... By the way, we do have Honeycrisp although most of our trees are just coming into bearing so we continue to have a very limited supply.  Everyone knows oranges and grapefruit have more Vitamin C than apples.  Right?  Wrong!  That is if you are talking about the famed Calville Blanc d'Hiver apple, that is.  This French apple has so much Vitamin C you can taste it!  Another fantastic thing about the Calville is that it makes the best pie there is!  Even slightly better than Northern Spy, which is also unusually high in Vitamin C but doesn't contain the huge quantities of this vitamin that Calville does.  The main problem  with Calville is it is susceptible to scab.  However, scab is just a surface blemish and only is skin deep!  You like apples big?  Try our huge Stark Jumbos that sometimes exceed 2 pounds each!  They are usually real nice  and make pies that rival Spies and Calville's in taste!  (Often, it's hard to tell the difference!)  Also, if you hand peel your apples their shear size makes the job a snap!  One of my favorite apples is Jonalicious since it often has the combination of tartness and sweetness I crave.  Believe it or not, we have many, many more varieties than mentioned here.  This year we planted 5 new apple varieties including King David, Opalescent, Liberty  and Sweet Sixteen!  We plan on planting new apple varieties every year.

While we are talking about weather, I must let you know that if you are delighted with really beautiful weather, be sure to visit Newaygo County this summer!   Early indications from sources not closely associated with that elderly and wise Native American are that much of the country is going to be swelteringLake Photo from Memorial Day through September.  Come to Newaygo County this summer!  It is overloaded with beautiful cool green forests and crystalline cool rivers and warm (but not hot) lakes and really enjoy this summer!
At the left is a bay of one of the six beautiful warm-water lakes within just two miles of Magicland Farms.  Like all five lakes, this one is loaded with Bass, Northern Pike, Walleye and panfish.  Also, you never know when a
Cisco or whitefish will strike your bait!  By the way, Pickerel Lake has been heavily stocked, the last 10 years or so, with delicious filets on the fin--i.e. walleyes!  You know what that means?  More scrumptious meals than ever!

You are probably aware that many areas of the world have definite rainy seasons and dry seasons.  Well Newaygo County, which is where Magicland Farms is located, also has rainy times and dry times.  The first moderately dry time usually starts in early April and continues until mid to late May.  Then we are normally blessed by some much needed rain during June.  However, starting on July 1st and continuing until mid to late August, we have an especially sunny and dry time period.  Seldom are daytime outdoor plans upset because of rainy weather during July or most of August.  When rains do come during this period they usually occur as nightime thundershowers and seldom last longer than two hours.   Starting in late August and continuing through September we have weather that can change drastically, year to year, during this period.  I remember Septembers where not a drop of rain fell all month and then I remember 1986 where so much rain fell during September that the Muskegon River flooded!  I also remember being at the stand on a late September  day in 1986 when a young lady stopped and bought a few pumpkins.  She commented "I planned to stop for a couple weeks now heading home from work but it was always raining!"  Starting around October 1 and continuing to a few days before Halloween is also normally sunny and dry with pleasant temperatures.  Then around Halloween the on and off rain showers start and they slowly turn into snow showers as we get deeper and deeper into November.  December is almost always cloudy--but who cares!  The days are so short anyway!  Then fantastic  ice fishing normally starts around Christmas and the sun slowly returns by mid-January!  And the cycle starts over !   Of course we have a great big caveat!  Every year is different  and just like in Asia where the monsoons sometimes fail,  sometimes, just sometimes, the indescribably beautiful summer weather in Newaygo County would better be described as just "nice weather"!

LOOKING BACK                 The first two weeks of June 2005 were not only exceptionally hot, (average highs over 90F)  at Magicland Farms  but it was also bone dry for over 3 weeks.  Until Saturday, June 11, the crops were suffering.  For an interesting story titled "The June 11, 2005 Delightful Romantic Rain that almost Turned Tragic" click here. Other Fruits and Nuts

Pawpaws (Michigan Bananas) -- We  hope to have a big crop of these delicious  hardy "tropical" fruit this year since the trees are loaded with blossoms. Pawpaws are really strange because it doesn't take a degree in botany to figure out they really belong in the tropics.  One look at their weird blossom, or a glance at their huge leaves or one taste of their sweet custardy fruit and your mind takes you immediately to a tropical jungle.  In fact, the botanical family they come from -- the custard-apple family -- is primarily tropical except for the ... Pawpaw!  Pawpaws are easily grown from seeds.  Also, they don't need any type of spray to get great fruit.  How to grow them?  Simply plant their seeds in the ground where you want the tree.  Anytime in the fall or winter you can dig in the ground is a perfect time to plant--don't plant after tax time (April 15) since they need lots of cold to get them set to germinate.

Prices:

  • Pawpaw seeds -- 3 for $1
  • Wisconsin strain of Pecans -- 3 for $2.00
  • Shellbark Hickory Seed nuts (these are the large type of sweet hickory) -- 3 for $2.00

Magicland Grown Hardy Pecans (Wisconsin Strain)--  While our pecans are delicious, we don't have many and they are much more valuable to us (at this time) as a seed source than as a food source.  You can have your own pecan trees by just planting the nuts we sell directly in the ground, just like pawpaw seeds.  The only trouble comes if you are bothered by squirrels.  Sometimes squirrels will find them and dig them up.  One way to stop this is to put a fence screen over them.  Check us out this fall for pecans!
