Description of Context
Describe any other characteristics of the
students or the working
environment that may influence teaching and learning in a narrative and
elaborate
on any of the items on the previous page.
In my class we have seven
students who have PEP’s. At least five of these students are low-level
readers. Our EOG
pre-test scores were a very wide range ranging from far below grade
level to
one or two students who were above grade level.
Some students were on grade level.
This influences the understanding of texts and vocabulary for
these
students. Their low level of
comprehension makes it very difficult for them to comprehend and
process what
they are reading. These students do
receive extra help. Also, we have two
students who are English Second Language students.
One student understands and writes more
English than the other, but both do receive help from the ESL
teacher. One of the ESL
students understands very little English, as far as any phonemic
awareness or
how to structure the language. We are
attempting to help him with beginning constants and adapting lessons to
his
abilities. We also have one young lady
who is very bright. She has been
home-schooled until now. The challenge
is keeping her challenged so that she does not become bored.
An
aspect of the learning
environment this semester is three students who are very
excitable. These students are talkative and
difficult
to keep in their seats. It is also hard
to get them to focus on and complete their work.
As far as materials in my
classroom, we have a variety of manipulatives to choose from that will
aid in
the ability to teach to those who learn better from this learning
style,
especially in mathematics. We also have
a few manipulative resources available for science.
As far as technology there is two computers
available with a printer. One of these
computers is hooked up to the Internet.
We also have an overhead projector that is used very often.
Anytime a projector is needed to project a
PowerPoint or a web page we must borrow the media cart from the
library.
