Maggie made a special
guest appearance on the
"Villains" edition of UK
nostalgia show After They Were Famous
in late June 2005. The programme was aired
on the terrestrial ITV1 channel
Amongst a
plethora of old Prisoner clips,
footage of Maggie at the Glen Street
Theatre, making-up in her dressing-room,
and performing in The Shoe-Horn Sonata,
Maggie waxed lyrical about the show that
made her a househoold name all over the
world, her career before and after Prisoner,
why she loves the theatre so much, and
the legacy of those infamous black
leather gloves!
On Joan 'The
Freak' Ferguson, Maggie recalled:
"Well, the description given me of
the character was a 'sadistic, corrupt,
bull-dyke screw'.
"I actually
auditioned for the role of Vera Bennet,
'Vinegar Tits', and didn't get it. But
that was alright.... back to the theatre
I went, and a couple of years later the
offer was made."
On
Val Lehman (who played Wentworth
"Top Dog" Bea Smith): "We
had some tremendous scenes together. And,
in fact, I still say 20 years later that
some of my best scenes were done with
Val."
On her career
before and post Prisoner:
"I had 20 years in the theatre
before Prisoner, and very little
television. So after 1986 I went back
from whence I came."
On theatre:
"There's nothing quite like it.
You've spent your four weeks, or
whatever, rehearsing with the director
and the other actors, and then that night
comes and you're on your own. And it's
you and that beautiful, beautiful
audience."
On those
famous black leather gloves:
"Sadly, I've never been able to wear
smart leather gloves since. If the
weather is really cold I just tend to
wear nice woolly mittens."
After They Were Famous
also featured Maggie making-up for her
role in the acclaimed The Shoe-Horn
Sonata. At the time of recording the
interview she was starring in the
production at the Glen Street Theatre in
Frenches Forest, New South Wales.
A small clip of
Maggie onstage was also shown.
After They
Were Famous also featured Val Lehman.
Val was interviewed and her life post-Prisoner
was also shown, including a visit to the
location where the outside scenes of the
series were filmed.
A great show,
wonderful memories from Maggie and Val,
and nice nostalgia trip for the thousands
of people around the world who still love
Prisoner.
