You Lit Up My Life

Part 1

"Aaaw..I'm sorry my little darlings....I'll get your friends tomorrow night, I promise!" Megavolt crooned to a small group of light bulbs. "Hmm...I understand!" Megavolt sighed sadly, seeing that his "friends" weren't talking to him. Not that they ever did anyway.

For a moment, the large rat simply stood in the center of the room, looking around. His battery pack lay on the side of a dusty yellow couch, and spare metallic parts lay scattered about, as he would use the odd piece now and again. He considered working on an experiment, but that evening's activities had pretty much reduced him to simply vegetating in his lighthouse hideaway, at least for the rest of the night. The way things usually went, he would have forgotten the fight with Darkwing Duck by morning, and things would be back to normal. Perhaps the light bulbs would be speaking to him again.

Megavolt walked over to a window, gazing out at the starry sky. He flinched slightly as he saw that the tide of the water near the lighthouse was nearer then usual, lapping at the bottom of his hideout gently. Water and him didn't mix.

A gloved hand touched at his cheek tentivly, and he sighed, his eyes half-closing dreamily. He had suddenly gotten a familiar feeling, and it itched at the back of his head more then a headache. He walked over to the couch, and reached beneath one of the mattresses. Inside, was a single photograph. It was clear that it had been ripped out of a yearbook, and the slight yellowing indicated it must have been many years ago. It was a photograph of a smiling young mouse. Megavolt smiled gently as he looked it over, remembering only tiny fragments of his past self, yet remembering enough to tell that he had loved her. Dark hair cascaded in curls around slim shoulders, and bright green eyes looked up at him, still filled with light. "Rita...." He read the name beneath the photograph, the only text salvaged when that particular picture had been ripped out of the St. Canard High School yearbook.

The following night....

"I swear...if Darkwing Drip shows up I'll...." Static trailed off, her attention fully on the new mini-mall that had been built in St.Canard. "I should be able to get a good electrical generator here!" She muttered. She needed a recharge of epic proportions, and with a generator, she could have her own "recharger" without having to always scout around some electrical wires trying to summon up a big enough shock.

Static sprinted from her hiding place behind a factory, and headed for the mall. It was closed and dark, and Static wondered if it had a night watchman. She hadn't thought of checking it out during the day, choosing instead to save whatever power she had left for the night.

As so went around the back, choosing to find a less obvious entrance, she picked up movement by one of the dark windows, and glanced in. She could see a flashlight, and narrowed her eyes, trying to squint enough to make out the figure holding it. She suddenly realized that it wasn't the light of a flashlight she saw, because the current of light was emanating from the figure itself, and she could see by the reflection of the current, a yellow jumpsuit.

Static sighed, and her eyes widened as she saw a small generator beside Megavolt. Without another thought, she pushed on the door leading inside the small room, which looked to be some sort of shabby storage room.

"HEY! Back off!" Megavolt cried out as he saw her enter. He had made it easy for her to get through the door, having melted the lock himself. "Sure...as soon as you hand me that generator beside you!" She spoke calmly, eyeing the generator. Megavolt glared at her, and positioned himself in front of it. "No way mousy! That's mine!" He growled, pointing what looked like a makeshift orange gun at her. "Oh please...are you mundane enough to shoot me?" Static laughed, and the laugh died instantly as a bolt of electricity flew out of the gun and at her face.

Dodging just in time, she sent a current of electricity shaped like a sphere at Megavolt, who dodged enough to her his whiskers singed. "HEY! NO FAIR! That's supposed to be my power!" He whined, rubbing at his cheek. "Yeah right, it's your fault I got this...electrifying personality!" She cracked a lame joke, having no better comeback for the moment. "Lame....and what are you talking about, may I ask?" He arched an eyebrow, and put his hands on his hips in arrogance.

"I'm talking about you frying me five years ago Sparky...at the St.Canard High School Prom!" She snapped, letting a small current of electricity run through her fingers, as if proving her point.

"Prom...." Megavolt trailed off, as the comment awakened bits and pieces of memories that had been ripped away five years ago. "Prom night...I was there!" He gasped, finally remembering. "Yeah, I'll say!!! I was crowned prom queen that night...and you almost killed me! Who are you anyway?" She hissed, forgetting the generator momentarily and crossing her arms. "I'm Megavolt!" The rat answered.

"Well Duh! I know that....but I mean, what's your name?" She asked, leaning closer. Megavolt concentrated, then rubbed his head. "I...don't know! I can't remember!" He shrugged, and kicked the floor lightly, as if kicking at invisible pebbles.

Static shrugged, figuring that being as crazy as Megavolt seemed to be, he probably had a very forgetful tendency. "All right, I'll buy that!" She muttered. "Buy what?" Megavolt asked, and Static rolled her eyes.

"Fine! Look, if you want the generator so badly, take it! I got light bulbs to free anyway..." He muttered, and received a strange look from Static, who nodded slowly. "I...see.." She trailed off, but Megavolt seemed to think that she actually *understood* what he was rambling about, and smiled enthusiastically. "Great! Then you can help me get the light bulbs!" He replied with stamina in his tone. "Okay!" Static shrugged, figuring that now that she had a generator, she may as well kill the rest of the night with Megavolt.

As they headed out of the room, Megavolt turned to her. Once again, both had a sense of deja vu, and shook it off quickly. "Say...how come I've never seen you around here?" He asked as they entered the large mall from the inside, and started wandering around the stores. Static shrugged. "I don't know...I don't associate much with other people!" She sighed. "Hey look...a light bulb in captivity!" She muttered, pointing at a lamp in a store with boredom. Megavolt immediately began to run towards the store, when a large puff of blue smoke blocked his way.

"I am the terror, that...." Darkwing began his trademark entrance lines, when a volt of electricity zoomed in his direction. Once the smoke cleared, he stood there, charred and black. "Hey...no fair! Your supposed to let me finish!" He coughed, black smoke exiting his mouth with each word. "Yeah well....save time!" Static shrugged, then grabbing Megavolt, they ran towards a staircase.

"Where...does this go?" Megavolt huffed as they ran up the stairs. "I'm guessing the roof...we'll find a way down from there!" She gasped, trying to keep a good pace. They got to the roof, and Megavolt melted the lock on the door after them, giving them a bit more time while Darkwing tried to open it from inside. "Here!" Static cried, seeing a drainpipe leading down.

"Oh no...last time I tried that, it burst and turned out to be full of water!" Megavolt backed away, shaking his head. "Well it's either we take the risk, or we face Darkwing! Of course, if you want to be suicidal, you could jump off!" Static suggested wryly. "Nah...I'm not Quackerjack!" Megavolt spoke as he headed towards the pipe. "Let's go!"

The climb down was painful. Easy as that. Static clung to Megavolt's neck as he descended down the pipe. "Hey...ease up on the...grip..." Megavolt choked, indicating that Static was holding him a little too tightly around the neck. "Sorry!" She replied, loosening her grip a little.

They got to the floor just in time for Darkwing to get the door open, and arrive to an empty roof. "See ya later Dripwing!" Static called out as she and Megavolt raced away in his car.
