Sydney Opera House
Sydney Opera House
The Sydney Opera House is one the busiest performing arts centres in the world.
Some people even find it hard to believe that the beautiful shells actually house many
theaters and concert halls.
History

In the late 1940s, people began pressing the New South Wales Government to build a performing arts centre in Sydney. J.J Cahill, the NSW premier at the time, was also enthusiastic and in 1954, a commitee was made to get the project underway. The site for the opera house was to be Bennelong point, named after the first english speaking aborigine.A world-wide competition was held to design the opera house and, in January 1957, from the 233 entries submitted, an entry by the Danish architect Jørn Utzon was selected as the winning design. The building started in 1959 and the opera house was eventually opened in 1973.

Events

Ever since its opening, the Sydney Opera House has held many events. Maybe its most
famous, though, was not actually inside the opera house its-self. I am talking about the
"Farewell to the Woeld" concert by the famous band "Crowded House". This was performed
on the opera house steps and was for free, so as to get a maximum crowd level. This worked,
with people from all over the world flocking in their tens of thousands.

Venues
There are four main venues in the opera house
Concert Hall with 2690 seats
Opera Theater with 1547 seats
Drama Theater with 544 seats
Playhouse with 400 seats
