Look into the mind....
Causes:
Inside the brain, depression is caused by chronic disruption of the neurotransmitter seratonin.
   ----->    ------>     ------>
seratonin controls mood, sleep, emotion and appetite, click here for more
Also caused by too much CRH, (corticopropin releasing hormone- the fight or flight hormone)
Also caused by too much HPA (hypothalamic pituitary adrenal, as a response to stress)
Modern Medicines Treatment:
Serotinin reuptake inhibitors like Prozac and Zoloft, prevent the reabsorption of seratonin after it has been used by neurons to transmit signals across the synaptic gap.
   ------>     ------->     ------->      ------->     ------>
the synaptic gap is the space that the nerve signal must be travelled across to reach the end. wanna see?

Humans are very complex creatures, because of our complex brain, specifically the cerebrum. The cerebrum is what distinguishes us from other creatures.We have the ability to worry, get stressed, remember traumatic events and learn from experience.
