When I was about ten years old, I had one of the most fun days of my life.  Looking back on it as an adult, I realize I probably drove my great grandfather crazy that day.  We called him Grandpa Hurst.  He and I spent the entire day together.  We worked in the grape arbor, put vegetables in the root cellar, made a new flycatcher out of a metal sheet and some sugar water with a light hanging very close to it.  We talked, or rather I talked, none stop and followed Grandpa Hurst around in the beautiful crisp spring air, feeling safe and happy.

That evening we were all gathered outside for dinner (we always ate outside because their house was too small to hold us all).  During the evening, someone commented that Grandpa Hurst had made a new flycatcher and how effective it was.  Grandpa Hurst spoke right up and said he couldn't have done it without me.  There are no words to describe how I felt when he said that.  I hope I can make everyone around me feel just that good every day of my life.

Knowing my great grandparents makes me one of the lucky ones.  My great grandfather and great grandmother were George and Mary Hurst. My grandfather and grandmother were Lynn and Inez Rogerson. My father was William LeRoy Conant and my mother is Phyllis Colter.  I have one brother, William LeRoy Conant, Jr. and one sister, Inez Dale.  I am the youngest, born in Ft. Richardson, Alaska, December 31, 1946, in the hall of the hospital on an unsanitary gurney.
