Osteomyelitis
A snippet of information from My Grandmother in Scotland.
The Sheltie was originally recognized as the
"Shetland Collie"
also were called
"Toonie".
Collie breeders objected to the name and it was changed to the
"Shetland Sheepdog".
They were originally NOT supposed to exceed 12 inches or 14 pounds according to the Shetland Stud Book in 1908.
The first sheltie standard was written in 1910, at this time the size was raised to 15 inches.
Now in this day and age, American and Canadian recognize the current standard of 13-16.

One report list Staphylococcus as the most commonly cultured organism.
It is seen most often in the neonatal dog and recognized as joint ill.
The septicemia is initiated from the focus of infection of the Umbilicus, which allows the infective emboli to enter the nutrient arteries of the long bones.
This infection can extend into the joint, yeilding a septic joint.

Sheltie Important Information
White is White, Right?
If we knew everything about genetics, we wouldn't have any more problems with our dogs.
We'd eliminate Hip Dysplasia, PRA, Heart Problems, Thyroid problems, Seizures, etc, within a few generations.
Unfortunately it is and Art that few people are very good at.
The need for Research
Take a peek at more on SIZE....and the huge differences there could be with each individual sheltie.
Not ALL are going to be someones  Wanna Be 13-16 and there is nothing wrong with NOT being 13-16.
