Gridlock in both directions on the road from Kathmandu to Pokhara and Chitwan N.P. There was a huge hole in the road caused by moonsoon erosion... we could see the river below.
Dugout canoes on the river. These are carved from an entire tree. The ride was uncomfortable... the birds and alligators made the trip worthwhile.
A local lass taking her water buffalo to the river. They are kept as domestic animals for milking and breeding.
Seven month baby elephant using me as a scratching post. The youngsters are not chained up until 10 months of age.
The elephants in the breeding project are chained up most of the time. Mothers take the babies to the river to wash during the afternoon. Wild bulls come into the compound at night, beat the crap out of the males, and mate with the capitive females. This male is rehabilitating after losing a few rounds with rogue elephants.
This mother and baby were a bit distracted by all the attention. There were 12 elephants in the vicinity carrying tourists. She made a break for it with baby in tow and disappeared into the jungle.
Large male rhino enjoying a mud bath.
Again not too happy with all the attention. This boy got up and left when we arrived!
The village at the edge of Chitwan N.P. The tourist lodges are located nearby and sunset over the river was beautiful.
Elephants like water.
Dawa (trekking guide) and me on Sanur. We were dropped back at our lodge and there was no loading ramp... so down we went on all fours.
Some wild animals are pussycats. I think this rhino was an orphan.
