The Light in the Darkness

Chapter 11

Nick didn't stay in his room very long though. It was true, he was exhausted, but he knew that he wouldn't be able to sleep without clearing up a few things first, so he stayed long enough to shower quickly and change; which also gave Kevin and Howie time to settle down in their rooms so they wouldn't miss Nick when he left.

Once he was sure that the coast was clear, Nick made his way out of the room and down the stairs to the lobby, not wanting to wait for the elevator in case one of the others should come out of their rooms for ice, or candy, or anything else that involved opening their doors.

Once clearly away from the hotel, Nick headed back to the hospital. Although Kevin had said that Brian would no longer be there, Nick figured it was as good a place to start as any.

He had lots of questions, and needed Brian to answer them. But to do that, he first had to find him.

He walked into the hospital, and headed for the waiting room, taking a deep breath before opening the door. He let the breath out again when he realised the room was empty, and that Brian was nowhere to be found. Closing his eyes, Nick tried to think where Brian had gone. He prided himself with his friendship with Brian, and the fact that he knew his best friend better than almost anybody else, including Kevin.

To that end he spun around and headed back down the hallway. If there was one place that Brian would go when he was feeling conflicted, it would be a church, or the closest thing to it he could find. And Nick knew he had seen a sign for a chapel in the hospital.

He jumped in the lift and impatiently tapped his foot as he waited for it to take him to the correct floor. As soon as the doors opened Nick jumped out and hurried down the corridor, before skidding to a halt outside the doorway, and taking another deep breath before pushing this door open.

Again he was disappointed, as the room was empty. This time however, he entered the room, and walked up to the small altar. He could almost feel Brian's presence, as if he had only just left the room.

Closing his eyes again, Nick tried to think of where else Brian could be. He knew that he had been right about Brian coming here, he just hoped that he could be 2 for 2 and be right this time as well.

To that end he left the room and headed down the hallway, allowing his innate sense to lead him to his best friend.

He found himself two floors up from the chapel, outside the ICU.
