Chapter 10
Kevin and Ice

Kevin walked down the path a little ways when he heard something jump out of a tree behind him. Lying down in the pathway behind him was a cat about the size of a clouded leopard, only it was beige-white with orange tipped ears, feet and an orange ringed tail. "You must be a fire cat" Kevin said hunching down to look the cat face to face.
'Yes I am a firecat and you must be a human' the cat replied his amber eyes with green ones.
"Yes I'm a human. I've never seen a firecat before. I'm not from Valhala" Kevin shrugged slightly as so not to lose balance.
'Anyone could see that with the way you are dressed. You are not even from this dimension I'm betting.'
"How would you know that?" Kevin asked startled a bit.
'You don't dress or act like anyone from any of the countries on this world. I can sense things like that. So what are you doing in my territory?' the cat asked lazily getting up and stretching.
"I'm sorry; I didn't mean to disrespect your territory..."
'I didn't say you disrespected it any, I was just curious as to what you are doing here.'
"I was just taking a walk. I wanted to see what you firecats were like. We don't have em' back home" Kevin replied standing up as well.
'I understand. I can also tell you are a firestarter. Have you done anything yet?'
"I made a big lizard monster explode into flames. I passed out afterwards though" Kevin sighed.
'As to be expected, you did work a major bit of magick. Don't feel bad about it, Jakara would have been just as spent as you' the cat said as it started down the path slowly. 'Walk with me otherworlder' he called behind him.
"Ok...and I'm Kevin by the way" Kevin said catching up to him quickly.
'Ice'
"Ice? Your name is Ice?" Kevin asked taken aback.
'Yeah I know, the name doesn't really fit, what with my fiery personality and all but I was born on Midwinter's Eve during the worst ice storm anyone had seen in ages. I was the only one born then so Jakara named me Ice' the cat said as she stopped to sharpen her claws on a tree.
"Jakara was there when you were born?" Kevin asked curiously.
'I'm only two winters old. My mother isn't bonded with anyone and with Companions that are not bonded the trainee's and other 'chosen' sit with the expectant companions and help them through the birthing process.'
"Oh I see that is cool" Kevin said thoughtfully "So are you bonded?"
'No, I haven't had anyone answer my call yet' Ice replied walking over to Kevin and rubbing between his legs so he would pet her.
"You called?" Kevin asked suddenly he felt something, like his mother calling him from a distance when he was out riding on the horses back home. It was weird and familiar and he answered it deep within himself.
Ice purred softly by his feet 'That brother of my soul was my call. You have answered it and you are my chosen one. For eternity we are bonded forever more no matter what.'
Kevin smiled and leaned down and scratched her from ears to rump watching her arch her back gracefully as he reached her rump "So you are my Companion now oh fiery one. Come on lets go back to Marigold's Field so you can meet my 'brothers'" he said walking back towards the way they came.
'Lead on flames-fer-brains' Ice said cuttingly but at the same time rubbed up against Kevin as a sign of 'just kidding'.
"Flames-fer-brains? Well see if I scratch your rump again" he said teasingly as they walked back down the path.
