Madanews : Pictures of Madagascar - Black and White [| ARCHITECTURES | PANORAMA | PORTRAITS | FAUNA | EVERYDAY LIFE | FLORA | TRANSPORT ] Madagascar, a strange exotic land, is the only afro-asiatic island in the world. With a total area of 587.000 sq. km Madagascar is the fourth biggest island in the world. In some ways, it seems that landscape and people in this red mini-continent are a mixture of Africa, South-East Asia , Arabia and Europe. Madagascar is famous for its unique fauna and flora. The eastern rainforests host a great number of plant and animal species - most of them are endemic. The deciduous forests of the western parts are well known for its large trees - the Baobabs. The southern region is covered with a completely different vegetation (spiny forests). Lemurs, which are native only to Madagascar and the Comoros, are the most interesting mammals. Madagascar is also the home thousand species of orchids and butterflies. The traveler can not expected a spectacular variety of wild game as an eastern Africa and not the long sandy beaches of Thailand but the "human capital" makes this island so interesting. The malagasy people are gentle and for those who are open for any kind of contact it will therefore be a unforgettable adventure. "Kintana" is a union - that is fighting for a better development an malagasy eco-tourism. Hungry people have no interest in nature-conservation and environmental protection. The only way is to find a link between nature and economy. Tourism can help to protect areas of great importance in the sense of ecology. Kintana will advance the knowledge and the understanding that is necessary for further development of the tourism sector. That means that tourists will be better informed to adept their behaviour to the cultural needs of the country and that the natives can profit from tourism without giving up their own identity.
