Carbohydrates are a necessary part of a healthy diet.  Carbohydrates are sugar chains that are linked together. They are found in many different types of foods and they come in two different sturctural forms.  The two different sturctural forms are simple carbohydrates and complex carbohydrates.  Simple and complex carbohydrates are determined by the length of the  sugar chains.

Complex carbohydrates are found in some of the items listed below:

                                          Whole grain products
                                          Apples
                                          Grapes
                                          Bananas
                                          Green beans
                                          Potatos
                                          Pastas
                                          Milk

Some
simple carbydrates are listed below:

                                         Sugar
                                         Candy
                                         Cookies
                                         Rice
                                         Bagel
                                         Soft drinks
                                         Cakes
                                         Popcorn

To maintain a healthy lifesyle, friut, vegetables, whole grain foods (cereals, whole wheat breads, etc.) and beans, along with exercise are needed.  Did you know that pancakes and waffles are whole-grain foods?  Well, they are, and they can be a part of a well balanced meal if eaten responsibly (that means only one or two small portions).
